NXT Redux (November 20th, 2014): Be(ck)st. At. Everything.

Hello one and all, and welcome to this weeks one stop, cream of the crop, totally on top, sharing shop for all things Diva when it comes to NXT. Last week, we saw Alexa Bliss sunset flip powerbomb her way into the impressed hearts of millions, but ultimately fall victim to 1/2 of Team Bae in Sasha Banks. This week, it’s the other half, Becky Lynch, who gets a chance at singles action when she goes one on one with the woman she turned her back on to join the illustrious group, Bayley!

Out to the ring we head, as our faithful announcer, JoJo, gets us started as Bayley walks out from the back. She hugs a small child at ringside because she had to prove me wrong when I thought she couldn’t get any more adorable-r. She climbs into the ring, waves around, and has a bright smile on her face like only Bayley could… as out next enters her opponent. She’s dastardly!~ She’s the head banging rock God, Becky Lynch! And she’s not coming alone, as right by her side stands HBIC, Sasha Banks.

Becky slides into the ring and shakes around a tad, as Sasha gives her a little rock sign of approval in a time where she needs it as the crowd immediately cheers their “bay” on. Bayley immediately backs Becky up and hits some head shots to the abdomen, before the two trade an Irish Whip that ends with Bayley leaping off the opposing corner with a lucha-esque arm drag! She charges forth to keep the momentum going, but Becky hoists her up and clothesline her right into the ring apron.

Lynch drags her back in and hits a suplex, then nailing a kick and following it with a legdrop/elbow drop combo for a two count. The crowd continues to get behind Bayley, as Lynch applies a choke hold and gets rolled up for her troubls. Bayley ducks a clothesline and takes Becky down, then building a comeback and following it up with her corner combo! Suplex finishes it, but just for a two count. Bayley climbs to the top, but Becky rolls out of the way and snaps Bayley’s neck off the ropes as Sasha distracts her. She then charges inside and scores the roll up victory over Bayley!

Both women begin taunting her, but they’re then interrupted as the NXT Womens Champion, Charlotte, walks down and orders the two of them out of the ring. Sasha and Becky make their way to the back as Charlotte and Bayley eye the twosome down.

What’s this?? We then head backstage to see Charlotte tying her boot up as she’s approached by Bayley. She thanks Charlotte for the help earlier, to which Charlotte replies by letting Bayley know that she’ll be absent next week and for Bayley to avoid Sasha at all costs. Bayley agrees, says thank you, and ends the segment with a hilarious hug on the stone faced champion.

In addition, Carmella(!!!!!) managed Enzo and Big Cass for their tag team match later on in the night. Unfortunately(!!!!!) there is no video online for this.

Thoughts: Not my favorite week in NXT for the Divas to be honest, but I think it’s understandable since they weren’t given as much time to shine as usual, which is perfectly okay. I felt the match was honestly too short to really develop, but it was fine for what it was and just really satisfactory over all. Like, I have nothing really to complain about, but everything just felt very standard, even with the aftermath. It’s kind of expected, however, that’s not necessarily a bad thing… just kind of a thing I don’t have much to say about.

I will say I’m still kind of 50/50 on the Sasha/Becky pairing. It’s so perplexing to me only because I feel there are so many pros and cons to it I can’t decide if I’m for it or against! On one hand, I think Becky really benefited from it because she’s back on the winning side of things and getting to do more. But on the other, I kind of feel like the two just don’t fit character wise. Like, Becky’s rock character was strong enough on its own (not saying she was booked strongly with it, just that the character itself was over and had enough of a presence solo), and I’m not sure it really goes with Sasha’s HBIC type. It kind of makes me think perhaps Alexa Bliss could have been a better choice for the heel turn as I can see her persona really gelling opposite Sasha’s a bit more than Becky’s just due to how different it is in comparison.

They also seem to, between this week and especially in the tag team match we saw recently, be booking Becky as sort of getting beat down a lot and sneaking out wins… which is also something I buy more with Alexa Bliss than I do her considering Alexa’s size and stature as being very small and quick. Becky feels like a bit of a brawler to me, who should be wrestling more in the ways that she did earlier on where the matches felt more 50/50 and she got to do some killer moves, even while going down in defeat, still looking strong throughout the match.

I mean I don’t have a problem with Sasha and Becky, it’s just very odd to me in the sense that I can’t decide how to feel about it. They’re kind of like having two completely opposite puzzle pieces and trying to make them fit when they both seem to go perfectly fine elsewhere, in the sense that I think Sasha is strong enough now to not need a partner, and Becky’s character was strong enough as well… she just unfortunately suffered from five girl division syndrome and had to always lose because there was nobody else to do it.

We’ll see how things evolve from here on the road to NXT TakeOver: (R)Evolution? (I hope I spelled that right). Nevertheless, next week should be fun and I’m still looking forward to seeing where we end up in December. Will Sasha be champion?! Will Charlotte continue her dominance?!

Stay tuned!~

WWE Superstars Redux (November 20th, 2014): Alicia and Paige Give Us Déjà Vu

$

Welcome, Diva fans, to this week’s (slightly belated) Superstars Redux! I’ll be your temporary hostess this week. On this week’s show, we have our second Paige/Alicia Fox match of the week.

Can Paige get revenge for her Main Event loss (*cough* in a match taped prior to it *cough*)? Let’s see:

They start with a tie-up, Alicia backing Paige up against the ropes. Paige uses her strength to push back, backing Alicia against adjacent set of ropes and planting a knee into her stomach. Paige sends Alicia into the corner, but gets only turnbuckle when she charges at her. Alicia slips behind her, leaping over her to avoid another attack before laying her out with a dropkick.

Paige halts any momentum Alicia might be building up with another knee to the midsection. She again sends Alicia into the corner, and again Alicia avoids her, lifting herself over Paige and taking her down with a sunset flip into a pin. Paige kicks out at two.

Alicia sweeps Paige’s legs out from under her and goes for another pin, but this one’s not successful either. Paige retreats into a corner and when Alicia follows her, she kicks her in the midsection, performing a schoolboy on her that smacks the back of her head against the bottom turnbuckle. Ouch!

Paige reminds Alicia that this is her house (in case anyone forgot..) and proceeds to stomp a mudhole in her. She then moves her over to the ropes and jams a knee into the back of the knee, choking her for as long as the referee’s count will allow. She soon relents and drags Alicia to her feet, laying her out again with a vicious headbutt.

She brings Alicia to another set of ropes and drapes her over them for her lashes a barrage of knees to the chest. Paige follows Alicia back into the ring and goes for a pin, earning a two-count. Paige then stands on Alicia’s hair and pulls her up by her hands, yanking at her roots. She catches Alicia in a submission hold, her hands and arms squeezing her head in a vice grip.

Alicia starts to power out, breaking Paige’s hands apart, but Paige finds herself in the perfect position for another submission, keeping Alicia’s arms spread and planting a knee into her back. Alicia eventually uses her strength to power out, tossing Paige off her and over her head. She hits a series of offensive moves, knocking Paige down with a clothesline, dropkick and tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. It’s not enough to pin Paige, though, as she kicks out from a pin attempt that follows.

Alicia’s getting frustrated, as she grabs Paige by the hand and screams “THIS IS MY HOUSE!”. I’m waiting for the arena’s owner(s) to show up and say, “Actually….”

Paige reverses an Irish whip into the corner, and when Alicia tries to hit another sunset flip counter, she drives an elbow to her face, halting her on the top turnbuckle. This puts her in the perfect position to be plucked off the turnbuckle and into the Rampaige. Paige hits the finisher and pins her for the three-count!

Thoughts: This was almost the same exact length as their Main Event match, but I think I preferred that one to this. It was just a bit more energetic than this one. It’s kind of cool that Paige was getting revenge in a match taped before the one she lost. I wonder if that was in the plan when they taped Superstars on Monday night?

I can’t complain about getting two matches from these two in the same week, even if they were slight variations of the same match. I did say on Diva Dirt Weekly that I wanted these two to continue their feud on Superstars and Main Event if there wasn’t room on Raw, and that’s what I got. I just hope there’s more to come, since they seem to be pretty evenly matched at this point.

I’m not crazy about Alicia turning into a quasi-face (no pun intended) in this feud. I was hoping they were going to push this as more of a heel vs. heel thing. She’s not a total babyface, but she’s definitely playing the good guy against Paige, and she’s with the babyface team at Survivor Series. I’d like it if they pushed that match as “Team Alicia” vs. “Team Paige”, so Alicia’s alignment with the babyfaces didn’t seem so random. Who knows? Maybe she’ll wig out on them during the match and prove me wrong!

I have to give the the announcers credit working to sell Alicia’s craziness on Main Event and Superstars. At least we know that’s not going away. She did do a tiny bit of the crazy ad-libbing we love in this match, so maybe there’s hope for evil Alicia to return soon.

Even though Survivor Series isn’t being billed as Alicia and Paige’s rubber match, maybe that’s what it will be. I wouldn’t object to seeing it all come down to those two. Maybe they’ll finally settle the debate on whose house we’re in!

On this day in history:

November 22nd, 2001 | In the spirit of the Thanksgiving holiday, Trish Stratus defended her newly-won Women’s Title against Stacy Keibler in a Gravy Bowl match. Alongside the “ring” was a spread of traditional Thanksgiving foods, and the Divas had a food fight before the match made its way into the tub of gravy. After surviving a few head dunks into the gravy, Trish dominated the rest of the match, and she soon latched a submission onto Stacy, forcing her to tap out.

Recapping Brooke on ‘The Amazing Race': Episode 8, “Hot, Sexy Knights”

Photo: CBS.com

Each week, as long as Brooke and Robbie E are in The Amazing Race competition, we’ll recap the newest episode, updating fans on where #TheWrestlers stand in the race.

This week, after the show took a week off to make room for the Hollywood Film Awards, the teams depart from Sicily and head for Malta, an island in the Mediterranean Sea. There, they’ll carry a heavy tray of drinks to the knights of Malta and receive the leg’s first clue.

Brooke and Robbie are the fourth team to depart. On the ferry to Malta, they conspire with the rest of the teams on how to best get rid of The Cyclists, suggesting that they give them a double u-turn. They even give themselves code names: Brooke and Robbie are Viper and Sniper.

When they arrive, it’s a race to the Bridge Bar, where teams get their trays and climb the seemingly endless set of stairs. A few of the teams drop glasses from their trays, forcing them to stop, return to the bar for a broom and dustpan to clean the mess and return to the bar again for replacements.

Despite Brooke’s fears, they make it to the knights without dropping a glass. They arrive alongside The Cyclists, who were the first to complete the challenge.

However, they then run into their usual problem: finding a taxi. It takes a while for them to get a ride to the boathouse, costing them a significant part of their lead.

They arrive and grab necklaces signifying their next departure time, putting them outside the top three and in the second wave of departures. There, they bunk down for the night.

In the morning, they’re faced with the leg’s roadblock. One member of each team must repel 20 stories down the side of a cliff and into a grotto to search for their next clue.

Robbie takes the challenge, finishing second in his group. He gets passed by the others in the swimming portion, though, leaving them in last place.

From there, they head to the Church of St. Scholastica, the spot of the leg’s detour. They must blindly select between “Flag” or “Shine”. Flag requires both team members to capture a red or yellow flag at the end of a greased up pole. Shine calls for them to don suits of armor and shine each other until they earn the knights’ seal of approval.

Brooke and Robbie take the Shine challenge, but get frustrated at how long it’s taking to complete. They decide to switch part way through and take on the Flag challenge.

Both fail to grab a flag on their first go-round, Brooke claiming the that fall in the water nearly broke her ass, AKA her “moneymaker”.

When Robbie fails on his second try, they decide to head back to the Shine challenge. They’re neck and neck with The college Sweethearts, who have also switched challenges.

They finish first and head for Fort Manoel, this leg’s pit stop.

They arrive before The Sweethearts, putting them in fifth place, as Robbie’s pecs illustrate.

They live to race another day!

The Amazing Race airs Fridays at 8pm ET on CBS.

SmackDown Redux (November 21st, 2014): AJ Gives the Bellas Triple Trouble

Hello everyone, and welcome to this week’s edition of the SmackDown Redux. This week on the blue brand, Divas Champion, AJ Lee goes head to head with Brie Bella, while the #1 contender Nikki Bella watches on. Can AJ gain some momentum going into her title match at Survivor Series? Check out the match below:

We kick off our Divas segment with Brie and Nikki already in the ring, and we’re treated to a recap of Monday Night Raw, where Brie (dressed as AJ) picked up a win over her sister in an exhibition match, and the bedlam that ensued afterward. Out next is… AJ… Bella?!

AJ comes out to the ring decked out in full Nikki Bella attire with some noticeable… enhancements. Obviously, Nikki is not very happy, and tries to attack AJ before she can execute that iconic Bella backflip over the top rope. On the other hand, Brie is pretty amused by AJ’s antics, much to Nikki’s displeasure. The referee signals for the bell and our Divas match is underway!

The two Diva lock up, but AJ quickly disengages to… um… adjust herself? They go to lock up again, but Brie quickly locks in a waistlock from behind, prompting AJ to use her newly acquired assets to escape from the hold and lock in a submission of her own. Brie tries to escape by whipping AJ off the ropes, but AJ goes right back to the side headlock, this time taking Brie down to the canvas.

Brie escapes the hold with a headscissors, but gets kicked right in the gut for her trouble. AJ whips Brie into the corner, and charges right into a elbow to the face, losing her momentum. Brie takes advantage, slamming the champion’s face into the turnbuckle, while Nikki barks orders from ringside. Brie tries to keep up her assault, AJ evades a clothesline and slams Bries face into the turnbuckle to even the score, followed by a unique attack, using her recent enhancements.

AJ then straddles Brie, and lays some stiff forearms, before pulling out one of her cutlets, and beating the holy hell out of her with it. Never thought I’d see that in WWE… Unfazed, Brie seamlessly rolls into a half Boston Crab, looking to make the champ tap, but AJ manages to reach the bottom rope.

Before Brie can go back on offense AJ locks in a guillotine choke, which Brie manages to fight out of quickly with a few shoulder blocks, but AJ comes backs with a flurry of her signature offense for a near fall. Not to be outdone, Brie comes right back at AJ with a few of her signature moves for a near fall of her own. Nikki jump on the apron, inadvertently distracting her sister from the task at hand. AJ takes advantage, shoving Brie into Nikki and rolling Brie up for the win.

Thoughts: A pretty good back and forth match from these two, if you ask me. While I’m still not that blown away by the storyline progression, I’m still looking forward to AJ vs Nikki this Sunday. Coincidentally, Brie’s indentured servitude ends right after Survivor Series, so I wouldn’t be shocked to see her be forced to help Nikki win the title, and end up challenging her for it afterwards, but let’s saves that for the prediction post, shall we?

Well, that’s it for guys. Until next time…

Despite an attempted repeat of Night of Champions by Aksana, Kaitlyn came close to victory. Eve’s wiles proved too much to handle, though. Eve would bait Kaitlyn onto the ring apron, where she took a hard spill. Eve’s neckbreaker finisher then sealed the deal, keeping the title around her waist.

Survivor Series Predictions: AJ Lee vs. Nikki Bella for the Divas Title

Tonight at Survivor Series, AJ Lee defends the Divas Title against Nikki Bella. Will Nikki’s personal assistant Brie tip the odds in her favor? The Diva Dirt team weighs in:

Adrian: With these rumours flying around about AJ’s possible departure, and Brie just days away from the end of her sentence as her sister’s assistant, all signs point to Nikki Bella getting her hands on the belt tonight. The Bellas’ feud needs a new sense of purpose, so having them at loggerheads over the title seems like the perfect way to transition their rivalry to its next stage.

Bobby: I’m not really into this feud to be honest, mostly because I had way higher hopes in terms of Brie being incorporated to make it stand out and I feel like that wasn’t capitalized on as much as it could’ve and should’ve been. In addition, I’m also not the biggest fan of seeing Divas dress up as each other in feuds anymore. Nevertheless, I want to see Nikki win eventually, but I have a different idea as to how, so let me elaborate and then watch as none of it comes close to being true! Tonight, I would visualize Nikki having the win in sight when Brie somehow accidentally distracts her long enough for AJ to latch on the Black Widow. Nikki taps and AJ Lee retains, leading to a promo on Raw where Nikki tries to fire Brie for not accomplishing the last task she was given, but because The Authority are no longer in charge, whoever is in charge throws out the entire stipulation and books a number one contenders match between the two. That match results in a double count out as they can’t stop brawling with each other around the ring, and that transitions into a triple threat at TLC where Brie hits the Bella Buster on AJ and Nikki throws her out of the ring to cover for the win. The two of them (AJ & Nikki) could rematch on either Raw or the Royal Rumble, with Brie somehow still closely involved. From there, we go into Brie vs. Nikki at WrestleMania! Now when we end up getting Natalya vs. The Bunny in a Total Divas Lumberjill BunnyMania 2.0 Interspecies match that has no actual contact and ends in strictly a roll up, just remember this idea and what could’ve been.

Chris: Since AJ got the upper hand on Smackdown I’d like to hope that Nikki would walk away with the victory. However, my gut tells me that Brie will cost Nikki the match, meaning AJ Lee will retain. Nikki goes to “fire” Brie tomorrow on Raw only for Brie to announce that the new General Manager had declared her personal services contract null and void. Brie attacks her sister and their feud continues.

Eleri: I’m torn down the middle here. On one hand I think Brie will screw Nikki over, prolonging their feud minus the title. On the other hand I foresee Nikki forcing Brie to help her win, leading to them fighting for the title. Not too sure where AJ fits in here, unfortunately. I’m going with door number two: Nikki Bella to win.

Erin: At this point, I think there’s more to gain from Nikki losing due to some Brie involvement (or lack thereof). She’s still in the midst of her growth as a heel, so while I think she would be a more than capable Divas Champion at this stage, I don’t think it’s her time just yet. AJ’s success over the past week has me wondering, though, because classic WWE logic would indicate that Nikki would pick up the win after being bested twice last week. Still, maybe this is building towards a breaking point for Nikki and Brie. Nikki losing would certainly accomplish that, leading to Brie’s “firing” or an all-out brawl between them once Brie’s sentence is over. Regardless, I think AJ Lee holds on to the title tonight. I’m sure it’ll be around Nikki’s waist very soon, though.

Jack: Although AJ’s third reign is only in its infancy, I’d like to see a title change here. Nikki can feud with Brie over the belt and AJ can go back to being more of a character with the guys. That’s what I’d personally like to see. Then after feuding with Brie, Nikki can defend the title against fresh challengers like Natalya, Naomi and Alicia Fox. Please win Nikki Bella!

Jake: I see AJ Lee getting the win over Nikki at Survivor Series. I feel like there’s still so much they can do with this feud…other than dressing up as each other which is pretty much the standard for any serious Divas’ feud. It’s Brie’s last day as Nikki’s manager so you know she’s going to cost her sister the match, especially since this week she FINALLY started to stick up for herself a bit. What I’m more interested in is the aftermath of all of this. I can definitely see Stephanie McMahon firing Brie again for not helping Nikki and Brie can get off the road for a few months before returning around WrestleMania to pick up her feud with sister, Nikki.

Josue: Putting all the AJ leaving rumors to the side, I’m going to say that AJ Lee will retain at Survivor Series. However, I think the bigger picture of this match will stem from Nikki and Brie’s storyline, as Brie will still be serving as Nikki’s personal assistant. Nikki will no doubt strive to use Brie’s obligations to win the title but as we near the end of Brie’s thirty day personal assistant clause, their feud will need to reach new heights and what better way then by having Brie cost her sister the loss during this title match.

Steven: With Brie’s servitude to her twin sister Nikki ending soon, I would bet that Brie would be challenging a newly crowned Divas Champion at the next PPV. That said, I don’t ever get it right when I bet against AJ, so I’m going with AJ Lee to retain tonight.

BREAKDOWN: 6 for AJ, 3 for Nikki.

Who do you agree with? Who is just dead wrong?

Survivor Series Predictions: Eight-Diva Elimination Tag Team Match

Photo: WWE.com

Tonight at Survivor Series, Alicia Fox, Emma, Naomi and Natalya take on Cameron, Layla, Paige and Summer Rae in a traditional Survivor Series Elimination Tag Team match. Who will survive? The Diva Dirt team weighs in:

Adrian: Well that’s a mix-and-match set of lineups if I ever saw one. Are the heels and faces of the Divas undercard picked by daily lottery? Nevertheless, I’m sure each Diva will use the twelve seconds of ring time they’re afforded to the best of their ability. Although Natalya is seemingly her team’s captain, the thought of Alicia and Paige being the final two is certainly appealing, so I’ll go for that, with Paige getting the win in the end.

Bobby: I’m oddly more excited for this than I am Nikki vs. AJ, and it has literally no build up at all which is funny. I love elimination tags, and I’m one of the few people who never understood why so many disliked the 7 on 7 one last year (PLEASE RETURN JOJO TO ACTIVE COMPETITION). As far as I’m concerned, everyone in this match is extremely competent in the ring, and with it only being 4 on 4, there shouldn’t be any need to rush eliminations like we usually see in the larger numbered versions. I’m expecting good things, and hoping they ring true. When it comes to sole survivors, I see the final three being Natalya, Alicia Fox and Paige. I still don’t think WWE are as invested in Alicia as I wish they would be, so my guess is that Nattie will make Paige submit and the sole survivors will be both Alicia Fox and Natalya.

Chris: I see Paige being the sole survivor here. WWE looks like they are trying to keep her strong even when she’s not in the title picture. I see her last eliminating Natalya.

Eleri: So is this officially Team Paige vs Team Alicia? Should be. I think Team Paige will win, with Paige being sole survivor. Keeps her looking strong, which I think is what they want. I’m just happy all these girls are getting a chance on the Pay-Per-View. I’m going with Team Paige.

Erin: I really wish they were officially pushing this as Team Alicia vs. Team Paige, since these two are the only Divas in this match with any real rivalry between them. Not even Cameron and Naomi have that anymore. Still, even though it’s not officially about them, I think the match will come down to these two. Paige seems to be getting a quasi-push, with the commentary teams constantly emphasizing that she still has her eye on the Divas Title, so I think this might be a way to keep her looking strong just outside the title picture. I say Paige will be the sole survivor, probably eliminating Alicia last.

Jack: There’s not a lot storyline wise to get excited for regarding this, yet with their being less participants than a normal Survivor Series elimination match, hopefully we can see some longer exchanges in the ring and more unique eliminations. I predict Alicia Fox as a sole survivor to help cement her face turn.

Jake: I am SHOCKED we’re getting two Divas’ matches. When I first saw the match graphic I thought it was a joke…and then I was mad WWE is still using that photo of Naomi in that horrible green lipstick. PLEASE STOP WITH THAT! I definitely see Paige’s team getting the win in this match. It’s clear WWE sees a future in Paige or I doubt there would even be a second Divas’ match if she wasn’t included. I expect this to come down to Nattie and Paige where they will put on a wrestling showcase for a few minutes before Paige has Nattie tap in battle of submissions.

Josue: Though this match may have just seemed to have been thrown together, I’m looking forward to it. It gets the Divas who aren’t involved in the title picture a chance to still appear on the PPV. From the looks of it, the tag match can still be used for the ongoing Paige and Alicia Fox feud while also retouching some history between former Funkadactyls teams and give us a chance to see more team work from Layla and Summer Rae against Natalya. In the end, to keep an ongoing feud going, I see Alicia Fox picking up the win for her team after eliminating Paige with the help from one of her (new Total Divas) teammate; perhaps that being Natalya.

Steven: Alicia and Paige have gone from BFFs to frenemies to mortal enemies in the space of a few months, so it’s only fitting that they lead opposing teams into Survivor Series. While I’m a huge Paige fan, I’ve been really impressed with Alicia Fox lately and would love her to take home the win for her team. And with her being added to the Total Divas roster, this is a perfect chance for her to get some much needed visibility and stature in the Divas Division.

BREAKDOWN: 4 for Alicia, 1 for Natalya, 5 for Paige.

Who do you agree with? Who is just dead wrong?

Tonight at Survivor Series, Paige learned that it rarely pays to work alone.

In a four-on-four Elimination Tag Team match, Paige saw the rest of her team fall one by one until she was the last woman standing.

Cameron was first eliminated, Naomi rolling her up into a pinning combination. Layla was next, getting eliminated following a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker from Alicia Fox. Summer Rae was the third Diva to go, tapping out to Emma‘s Emma Lock.

This left Paige alone against Alicia, Emma, Naomi and Natalya. She did her best to overcome the odds, but they were too great, and she soon found herself eliminated by Naomi. This made for a clean sweep for the babyface team.

Tonight at Survivor Series, AJ Lee lost the Divas Title to Nikki Bella in a very quick and unexpected way.

Soon after the bell sounded, Brie Bella planted a kiss on AJ. Nikki then immediately hit her with the Rack Attack. It proved to be a kiss of death for the Divas Champion, as she was then pinned for the victory.

Nikki is the new Divas Champion, and the Bella twins appear to be happily reunited.

Stephanie McMahon and The Authority are out of power.

Tonight at Survivor Series, as per the stipulation of the Team Cena vs. Team Authority Elimination Tag Team match, Stephanie and Triple H have been removed from their seats of power atop the WWE.

The match, which featured a surprising appearance by Sting, saw Dolph Ziggler score the win for his team and seal The Authority’s fate.

As Vince McMahon stated at the beginning of the show, Stephanie and Triple H will retain their “desk jobs”, but will no longer have an influence on the personal or professional lives of the Superstars and Divas.

Today in History: Lita vs. Victoria in a Steel Cage Match

On this day in history:

November 24th, 2003 | Raw Roulette had rarely been a friend to the Divas, and Lita was surely cursing her luck when GM Eric Bischoff and Molly Holly spun the wheel and informed her that she would be competing in a Steel Cage match, a first for the Divas. Her opponent Victoria was raring to go, but found herself being tossed headfirst into the cage wall upon entering the ring. Several cage collisions and escape attempts later, Lita hit Victoria with a moonsault and attempted to leave the cage by the door. However, Matt Hardy appeared just in time to slam the door in her face. This allowed Victoria to slip out of the door and get the win. Matt then climbed into the ring to do some more damage to his ex-girlfriend, but Christian came to her aid, chasing Matt off.

Survivor Series in Review: A Night of Extremes

Survivor Series was, for lack of a better word, packed. Two Divas matches, a pre-show appearance and one big meltdown at the end of the show ensured that Diva fans would have a lot to talk about today. And that’s not even mentioning what actually happened in the matches…

The card saw AJ Lee defend the Divas Title against Nikki Bella, while Alicia Fox, Emma, Naomi and Natalya took on Cameron, Layla, Paige and Summer Rae in a traditional Survivor Series Elimination Tag Team match.

Before any of that could happen, though, we had an appearance by Rosa Mendes on the Survivor Series Kickoff show. She’s now Fandango‘s manager, and is taking on some sort of flamenco gimmick:

Fandango defeats Justin Gabriel in his return match. Does he have his mojo back? I don’t care, really. It’s just nice to see Rosa back in a managerial role. I liked what she did with Primo and Epico, so maybe she can replicate that here.

On the show itself, our first Divas match is the four-on-four bout:

Alicia kicks things off by throwing her ring jacket at Paige, but she doesn’t start the match for her team. Instead, Natalya faces off with Paige. They trade momentum, Paige turning a side headlock into a headscissors submission, which Natalya kips up out of. They then repeat the exchange, this time with Paige doing the kip up (kipping up? kip upping?).

Natalya battles back and takes Paige out with a double underhook suplex. Paige slips out of the ring, and Natalya knocks her even farther away with a baseball slide before chasing after her and dragging her back to the ring. Once inside the ring, Paige seeks refuge in the ropes, clinging to the bottom one and yelling at Natalya to get off of her.

Once Natalya back off, Paige levels her with a forearm and tags in Layla, who misses a legdrop. Natalya takes the opportunity to tag in Emma, who gives Layla whiplash and goes for a pin. Layla kicks out. She rolls her up for another pin, but that too is unsuccessful. Another pin follows that one, but again Layla kicks out. Emma needs to rethink her strategy..

Emma whips Layla into the ropes and goes for an arm drag, but Layla reverses it, flipping Emma into a pin attempt. Emma reverses it into a pin of her own, but Layla escapes. Two kicks from Layla level Emma, but the subsequent pin attempt doesn’t keep her down. Emma kicks out. Layla tags in Paige.

Paige nails Emma with a headbutt. She brings her over to the ropes, kneeling against the back of her neck and allowing Layla to get in a kick before hitting Emma with a barrage of knees to the chest. While Paige taunts the audience, Emma fights back, attempting to drive Paige’s head into the turnbuckle. Paige blocks it, though, and sends Emma’s head into it instead. Paige climbs the turnbuckle from the outside and drags Emma up with her. Unfortunately for Paige, this puts her in perfect positioning for a superplex, which Emma hits after taking control of the exchange.

Paige is hurting, so she tags in Cameron. She kicks Emma and takes her to the ropes, exiting the ring just so she can slap her from below. Cameron reenters the ring and trash talks some more before hitting Emma with a suplex. She hits a split leg drop and goes for the pin, but Emma kicks out. Cameron captures her in a submission, but Emma battles back and pulls her into a backslide pin attempt. Cameron kicks out after a one count. Emma tumbles to avoid a clothesline and tags in Naomi.

Cameron comes charging at her former tag partner, but gets a kick to the head for her trouble. Naomi enters the ring via the top turnbuckle, climbing it and taking Cameron out with a crossbody. She chases all of Cameron’s partners off of the ring apron before returning to Cameron. Her Irish whip in reversed into a kick to the stomach, Cameron taunting her. When Cameron tries for an Irish whip of her own, Naomi reverses it too, latching her legs around Cameron and taking her out with a stunner. Naomi goes for the pin, but Layla storms into the ring and breaks it up.

Alicia enters the ring and takes Layla out with a dropkick, bringing in Summer, who returns the favor with a spinning heel kick. Emma enters, tossing Summer out of the ring. Paige then takes out Emma, drawing in Natalya, who blasts Paige with her spinning clothesline.

Natalya tries to do some damage to Cameron, but Cameron fights back, taking her out with a running bulldog. This leaves her alone with Naomi, who rolls her up into a bridged pinning combination. It’s enough to keep Cameron down for the count, and she is eliminated!

Cameron has been eliminated.

Summer enters the ring and charges at Naomi, but her blow is blocked. Naomi nails her with a forearms and snapmare, setting up for a low dropkick, but Summer screeches and back away. She doesn’t back away far enough, though, as Naomi then simply kicks her in the face. Naomi pins Summer, but she kicks out after the one count. Summer slips out of a bodyslam attempt, dragging Naomi to the mat by her hair. She goes for the pin, but Naomi kicks out even before the referee can start his count.

Summer performs a splash onto Naomi’s arm (?) and tries for another, but Naomi rolls out of harm’s way. She tags in Natalya, who Summer immediately takes out, kicking her before she can get through the ropes. Summer then knocks off the rest of the team before following Natalya to the outside, retrieving her and tossing her back into the ring.

However, Alicia’s seen enough, and tags herself in. She storms in, Alicia-style, knocking Summer off her feet and taking her down with a series of dropkicks. She uses Summer like a battering ram, driving her into Layla. She drags in Layla and Paige, ready to take on them all. Indeed, she takes them all out at once with a crossbody. As they exit the ring, she climbs the turnbuckle, ready to dive out onto them. They see this and back off, though, and Alicia calls them chickens.

Slowly, they return to the ring apron, and are greeted by a roar from Alicia. Summer isn’t having any of this, and she frantically tags in Layla. She ties up with Alicia, but the hold is broken. Layla taunts her with a little chicken dance before being taken down with a Lou Thesz press. Alicia pummels her a bit before hitting her with a bridging suplex. Layla kicks out.

Alicia whips Layla into the corner, but gets a kick to the stomach when she charges in for the attack. Layla leaps from the second rope, hitting Alicia with a crossbody. Alicia uses her momentum to roll out of a pin attempt, hitting Layla with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker that’s enough to keep her down for a three count.

Layla has been eliminated.

Paige doesn’t waste any time, entering the ring and kicking Alicia in the face. She tosses Alicia into the corner and tags in Summer, whose attack is telegraphed by Alicia. She gets snatched up mid-air and carried to the opposite corner, where Alicia tags in Natalya. They hit Summer with a tandem side Russian leg sweep. Natalya follows that up with a clothesline and attempts to take out Paige as well, but she’s just out of her reach on the ring apron.

Summer tries to ambush Natalya, but gets nothing but a face full of turnbuckle. Natalya hits her with a snapmare and hits the move Naomi wasn’t able to earlier, driving a low dropkick to Summer’s face. She hits a spinning clothesline, but her follow-up Irish whip is reversed, and when she hits the ropes, Paige nails a kick to the small of her back.

Summer tags in Paige, who immediately finds herself snared into a Sharpshooter attempt. Summer quickly frees Paige, knocking Natalya down before hurrying back out of the ring. Paige tags her in and sets up Natalya against the middle rope, inviting Summer to perform some of her knees to the chest. They aren’t as flashy as Paige’s, but they’re effective. Summer then pushes her luck too far, mocking Paige’s scream and giving Natalya time to knock her off the ring apron.

Paige tosses Summer back into the ring as Natalya tags in Emma. Emma hits her with a few clotheslines before trying to whip her into the corner. Summer reverses it, but Emma dodges her attack into the corner, capturing Summer in the Dil-Emma. After breaking the hold, she performs a very Emma-like move, tumbling forward to deliver a forearm to Paige and knock her off the ring apron. She tumbles over to the nearby corner and hits Summer with the Emmamite Sandwich.

She drags Summer away from the ropes and lock in the Emma Lock, forcing Summer to tap out.

Summer Rae has been eliminated.

This leaves Paige all alone. She chickens out the first time she tries to enter the ring, attempting to leave altogether. Emma follows her, though, bringing her back to the ring. Paige is quick to her feet and nails her with a kick, hitting some headbutts and driving Emma into the corner, where she stomps a mudhole into her. Emma catches her foot, though, and sweeps her legs out from under her, tagging in Natalya.

Natalya tries to bodyslam Paige, but Paige slips out and hits some chin music on Natalya. Paige tries to inflict more damage, but Natalya reverses into a German release suplex, tagging in Naomi.

Naomi goes for her springboard moonsault, but Paige stick up her knees and blocks it. Paige tries to go after Alicia, but gets forearmed by her instead. Paige then stumbles right into the Rear View. Naomi follows this up with a headscissors move, driving Paige face-first into the mat. Naomi then pins her and gets the three count!

Paige has been eliminated.

It’s a clean sweep for the babyfaces! They (and Tyson Kidd) celebrate the victory, giving the crowd a nice “feel good” moment.

Next up, we have our Divas Title match:

Brie and Nikki Bella are already in the ring as AJ makes her entrance. The bell rings, and Brie springs up on the ring apron with AJ’s Divas Title on her shoulder.

AJ notices this, and gets in Brie’s face. Brie then grabs AJ and plants a kiss on her (??????)! AJ breaks out of it and turns right into a forearm by Nikki. Nikki then immediately hits the Rack Attack and pins AJ! She’s the new Divas Champion!

And Brie looks… happy? She certainly doesn’t look like she did this against her will. She celebrates with Nikki, handing her her title. Brie’s got two days left of being Cinderbella, but did this have anything to do with that?

Later on the WWE App, Nikki didn’t exactly clarify things in an interview with Bryon Saxton:

She says the story isn’t about Brie, deflecting Saxton’s questions to talk about herself and how she earned the title. She prevents Brie from answering any questions, and Brie looks a bit annoyed as they leave.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Stephanie McMahon‘s epic freak out upon Team Authority losing the main event slot, putting her and Triple H out of power.

It’s classic McMahon theatrics, and I love it. Stephanie is truly her father’s daughter.

Oh, and her bump during the match should put to rest any pregnancy rumors. It’s only a matter of time before the WrestleMania match speculation returns full force!

Thoughts: The four-on-four match didn’t seem as sloppy watching it the second time through. The beginning was just fine, if drawn out a bit. This was a fifteen minute long match, which sounds like a Diva fan’s dream on paper, but it just felt overly long here. Making this too short would have surely rendered it a clusterfuck, but I do think it dragged a bit. I guess that’s what happens when the card is thin and the Divas Title match is less than a minute long.

I liked the dynamic between Paige and her partners. She’s a lone wolf, but an entertaining one, mocking her teammates. I can’t even compare heel Paige to babyface Paige. She’s just so entertaining now. Long gone is the bland Paige of old. Speaking of babyface/heel comparisons, I’m not crazy about the idea of Alicia being a babyface, but she was as entertaining as ever here, so maybe it’s not all bad. As long as she can still be the wild card, I think we might be okay.

Summer’s comedy acts were fun, but they come across as awkward when the crowd doesn’t react. Maybe if the match was a little tighter and quicker, the crowd wouldn’t have been as unresponsive. There’s definitely place for Summer as a comedy heel, but they need to find a way to get the crowd to respond better. Maybe having Summer on TV more consistently would help.

Somehow, even though she lost, Paige was clearly the star of the show. She didn’t score a single elimination, but she’s the one people will be talking about, in the end.

All in all, I didn’t hate the match. It just, like I said, felt drawn out, especially since it ended with no eliminations on the babyface team. The booking left a lot to be desired, I guess. It wasn’t particularly messy until the match broke down and multiple Divas got involved, which is what usually happens in these situations. That running bulldog by Cameron and the strange splash by Summer which made me cringe, too. Maybe the design of the match just isn’t conducive to some of the less experienced girls working calm and collected.

I will say, though, that it could have been a lot worse. There have been much worse multi-Diva matches in Survivor Series history, which probably doesn’t sound like a glowing review. I’m kind of just “meh” on it, I suppose, which is weird, since it seems to have polarized much of the Diva community. I’m glad it happened, though, because if the AJ/Nikki match was the only Diva match on the card, the night would have been a lot more controversial.

As for AJ and Nikki… I’m almost afraid to talk about it. I feel like there’s land mines all over the place, since Diva fans either LOVED what happened or HATED it or think it means AJ’s definitely gone. Putting aside the AJ speculation (which, for the record, I still think is bullshit), it was a clever move. I certainly didn’t see it coming. I’m not sure why they didn’t pull the Brie distraction a bit later and let them wrestle. Hell, the introductions by Lilian Garcia were longer than the damn match. Maybe they’re saving it for an AJ/Nikki match at TLC. That way, we as an audience will be dying to see AJ get her hands on Nikki. Maybe? I don’t know.

The spot itself was weird. Did Brie have to kiss AJ? Why not hit her with the belt while Nikki distracts the referee? I know it plays into the “mind games” thing, but it felt a little cheesy and faux-controversial. Maybe it just annoys me because it exposes how hypocritical the WWE’s PG policy is. We can have non-consensual girl-on-girl action, but no women wrestling men! No sir!

It’s an interesting twist, though, and I like that we don’t quite know what’s going on: is Brie still playing Cinderbella? Are things repaired between the Bellas? Is Brie just setting herself up for an easier path to the Divas Title? This isn’t a case of muddied writing: they’re obviously making it unclear to add some mystery. I’m sure we’ll get to the bottom of it soon.

Survivor Series, it turns out, was a night of extremes: one match was too long, and one was far too short. One was a classic “feel good” moment, and the other had a confusing twist and possible heel turn. No one, it seems, is completely happy with what went down.

Hell, maybe Stephanie’s freak out at the end of the show was just reflecting the mindset of Diva fans. They went through a lot last night.
