July 19th, 2015 | At Battleground 2015, no official women’s match was scheduled at the start of the show but a mid-show decision by Stephanie McMahon put a Triple Threat match in the books. Each of the three trios from Team Bella, Team PCB and Team B.A.D were asked to choose one representative to compete. Come match time Brie Bella, Charlotte Flair and Sasha Banks would be chosen, and the three put on a show, at one point bringing every Superstar at ringside to the floor with high risk maneuvers. In the end, Brie fell to Charlotte’s figure eight, having opened herself up to the hold when she saved Charlotte from Sasha’s Bank Statement.

Taya leaves AAA amid controversy over the AAA Reina de Reinas Championship

Taya, who was stripped of the Reina de Reinas Championship title earlier this month, is now leaving AAA after the promotion performed its own “screw job.”

Taya was stripped of the title because she used a choke during her No-DQ match with Ayako Hamada months earlier in April when she won the belt.

Earlier this week Sexy Star won the AAA Reina de Reinas Championship at Sunday’s AAA television taping in Monterrey. It was her first match for the promotion since she announced her retirement from pro wrestling last year. She decided to focus on boxing but then made a return to the wrestling ring stating that she had a change of heart.

Taya responded to the surprise upset on twitter:

Instagram Photo

According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, apparently AAA asked Taya’s fiancee (and current AAA triple champion) Johnny Mundo to bring Taya’s Reina de Reinas title belt to the June 30 taping in Puebla, under the pretense that they needed to hold onto it to take photos. The next day, AAA announced the title was vacated, stating that Taya had been stripped of the title due to using a choke hold in a no-disqualification match.

In Monterrey, Vampiro, currently AAA’s Director of Talent, announced to the live crowd that Taya did not show up to defend her title, even though the truth is she was never booked or scheduled to appear in Monterrey anyway.

Vampiro had this to say about the situation:

“Probably shouldn’t do this as I don’t give a f–k, but a mark is a mark, regardless of its gender! It’s called building a story and a angle and the day that talent dictates what happens in any company, then the company is in trouble. There are hundreds of people involved in planning stories ,programming events in advance, and , for me to even waste time addressing this to you, is crazy, as, I have a responsibility to do the best I can with what I have in front of me. Running a company in three continents is extremely complicated.

Now , as far as Taya is concerned, I chose not to say anything as I have been around long enough to see to many young talents close doors because they lose touch with reality. I support her and I think she is incredible. Her opinions are hers and hers alone. As far as you go, they say you do what I have done, or go through what I have gone through, and can do a better job than me , I will respect you. For now, I apologize , but to me , you’re a person who made me take 5 mins out of my day to answer your text, out of respect for your ignorance. Other than that, have a good day!”

Johnny Mundo gave his two cents, calling Vampiro a “two faced lying douche bag who believes his own lies.”

Taya was with the promotion since 2012 and is a former two-time and longest-reigning Reina de Reinas Champion in history.

Lucha Blog reported much more information about the situation on Monday, saying that to the best of their knowledge, a deal was worked out at the end of June between Sexy Star and AAA for her to return and giving her the belt was part of the deal.

What do you think about this situation? Sound off in the comments below.

Tonight on NXT, Ruby Riot and Ember Moon square off to determine who is deserving of a future NXT Women’s Title opportunity.

Read WWE.com’s preview to tonight’s show below:

“With NXT Women’s Champion Asuka making it clear on social media that she is waiting for a challenger that is deserving of her time to step up, two Superstars have made their intentions known. Now that Ember Moon has fully recovered from a shoulder injury caused by The Empress of Tomorrow, she’s wasted no time picking up where she left off, earning an impressive victory over Peyton Royce in Moon’s first match back on the June 21 episode of NXT. Meanwhile, Ruby Riot has been wreaking havoc in the thick of the Women’s division for months now, but has yet to challenge the titleholder in a one-on-one contest. While Moon was talking about her NXT Women’s Title aspirations with reporters two weeks ago, Riot overhead and took exception, interrupting the media scrum to remind Moon and everyone listening that she hasn’t gotten her turn yet at the coveted title.”

Six time Knockouts Champion Gail Kim recently announced that she would be retiring from the ring by the end of 2017.

Despite this, Gail will still have an active role in GFW as Jeremy Borash has announced during a conference call (via Wrestling INC) that the Hall of Famer will serve as a backstage agent for the Knockouts:

“This may be known but we are happy to have on board as an agent for Impact Wrestling, who will be helping with our Knockouts, Gail Kim, who announced that she would be retiring at the end of this year. So she’s going to be taking on a more behind-the-scenes role. Everybody may not know but Gail and I had a very strong friendship for the last decade. I obviously do stuff with her husband Robert Irvine, the chef. And she has an incredible mind and really somebody that’s going to take the Knockouts to the next level. So she’s in Orlando and Tampa training gals that you’re seeing.”

It was also teased during the conference call that GFW have signed two new established names to Knockouts division but have not disclosed any additional details about them.

What do you think of Gail’s new role? Who do you think are the two new names GFW have signed? Let us know in the comments below!

SmackDown Redux (July 18th, 2017): Putting everyone on notice

The women’s division have their eyes on the prize – and this Sunday one of them shall be one step closer to it. But for now, we need some filler to get us there. Let’s see what happened last night!

The ladies competing in this Sunday’s match are all in Shane McMahon’s office, awaiting their orders for the night. Charlotte Flair insists that she should battle Lana, the woman that cost her the match last week. Natalya then insists that she should fight Lana, for no valid reason though. Tamina soon gets involved, defending her friend from her newfound enemies.

After Shane spends a little time debating on what to schedule, as he needs to show off some competition, Natalya recommends pitting Charlotte against Becky Lynch! Flair denies the offer, insisting that there won’t actually be any competition, as she beat Becky at every opportunity in the past – and this is what sets the Lass Kicker off! Onto the match? Yes!

Natalya remains on commentary throughout the match and constantly digs at the two in the ring for being “fake” BFFs and how she is more deserving to win this Sunday.

The match itself is pretty great. We see a good level of sportsmanship and a lot of heavy attempts of winning. Charlotte attempts the big boot, but is left at a 2-count. She also tries a Natural Selection and a Moonsault, both of which get turned into Dis-Arm-Hers. The closing moments of the match take place as Flair is in the Lass Kicker’s submission, and attempts to grab the ropes. However, Lynch is too quick for the Queen and moves her around the ring, forcing her to tap. So make that a second loss in a row for Miss Flair! The two then end up shaking hands at the end, despite Charlotte’s clear frustrations.

Things take an even more sour note when Tamina and Lana walk to the ring together. Natalya takes advantage of this and knocks Becky down. Flair attempts to help her friend but the numbers game takes over and she is soon tossed out to the ring with her friend. Natalya then takes down Tamina, attempting to insert the Sharpshooter. However she finds her head slammed to the ground by Lana. Quick to get on her feet, though, Neidhart aims to get to the Ravishing Russian but falls victim to Tamina’s boot. Snuka is then the one looking the strongest and walks out of the ring. To Battleground we go!

Naomi is then interviewed by Renee Young, as she is asked about the upcoming number one contenders match. She insists that regardless of the result, she will be the first one to congratulate them. And as she goes on about saying how she will be ready for any challenge, Carmella and her briefcase intervene. The Princess of Staten Island states that wherever the champ goes, ‘Mella and the briefcase also go – like Battleground, for example…

At another point in the night, Maria Kanellis accompanies Mike Kanellis to his first singles match – and it’s against the lovable Sami Zayn! The duo have a decent match, that comes to an end once Maria gets involved. As Sami sets up Mike for the Helluva Kick, the First Lady of SmackDown Live stands in front of her husband. The referee is torn between keeping Maria out of the ring and pushing Sami away. So whilst the distraction is set, Mike quickly punches Zayn to the head and inserts his finisher, pinning him for the three-count. 2-0 to Team Kanellis!

After the match, Dasha Fuentes confronts the two, asking if Mike is really happy about winning his debut match through that method. As Mike is explaining his feelings, Maria grabs ahold of the mic. She says that Sami deserved what he got, and that was a lesson on “the power of love” – and that’s one way to go about it, I suppose.

Also, WWE announced that Mike and Sami will face off at Battleground in a rematch!

Thoughts: SmackDown is the land of opportunity – as anyone that watches for two minutes will be fully aware of. And with the women’s division, a certain approach tends to be trend here.

With the (unofficially named) “SmackDown Six” that consisted of Nikki Bella, Alexa Bliss, Naomi, Natalya, Carmella and Becky Lynch, the women were constantly put on an equal level – particularly during the early stages. This worked well for the group as it made every woman viable options to be champions. Just think of how well Alexa worked as a champion because she was given a platform to look just as good as everyone else.

As the new roster finds a bunch of women coming from different levels of their career, a similar construction needs to take place. Women like Charlotte have been at the top of their game, and are quite frankly above almost anybody else. Tamina has gone through years of being mistreated and without much of a character. And Lana has yet to be a proper Singles competitor. So with that being said, there is some work that needs to be done so that the division as a whole can be just as good as its predecessor. It’s understandable that we’re in a place where we’re constantly seeing the division thrown together. This is so we don’t end up having anybody referred to as a “jobber”, despite a losing streak. It makes perfect sense.

What made the previous division work was that there were genuine-feeling feuds threaded between the “every woman gets a chance” matches. We had Carmella and Natalya, Becky and Alexa, Becky and Alexa, Natalya and Carmella, and Naomi and Natalya. Whilst the feuds may not be as entertaining as the former ones, we are still getting them. Charlotte wants to take down Lana to make sure she learns her lesson. Natalya wants to take down Charlotte to prove the dominance of both herself and her family. Becky is there to fight anyone that gets in her way, particularly her long-lasting enemy Natalya. And Tamina is there to take down anyone who comes for either her or her friend Lana. We have these feuds. They’re being built, and for now we need some filler. And although that term isn’t our favorite one to get accustomed to, it is what is sometimes needed.

Sunday’s winner could offer some great feuds. Becky, the woman with the least to do, could benefit in a face versus face battle with Naomi. Natalya could also do with a fresh feud, especially as her chemistry with Naomi is undeniable. It’d also be nice to see former Team B.A.D. members battle it out on a big stage. The opportunities are almost endless – we just need to see creative choose the right one and make it work.

We also have Carmella. Despite this talent having so much potential, she is really being let down here. This is week number two of no Ellsworth, and still, she isn’t being given much to work on. ‘Mella dealt with a short backstage encounter last week, and the same thing happened now. She isn’t being allowed to get over with the crowd and separate herself from Ellsworth. Carmella needs to make her name known, and not to be associated with the man that won the first women’s Money In The Bank contest. And it’s frustrating to see as she has been doing so well lately.

This may just be a ploy to make her inevitable cash-in be shocking, as she doesn’t come across as too threatening. But with how good she is on the mic, it’s a shame that she isn’t allowed to create even more of her own heat through it.

Outside of the women’s division, Maria Kanellis stands by, asserting her dominance elsewhere. This feud with Sami is an entertaining one. I love how despite not competing in the ring, Maria is still a big part of this feud. And with the match now happening again on Sunday, it could be an exciting time to be a Kanellis fan!

Sami is the ultimate underdog, and the Kaneliss’ need to be taken as serious threats. He’ll be able to put them over – and more importantly, Maria – the longer this feud lasts (as long it doesn’t last forever). I can appreciate how Maria isn’t emasculating Mike, and is instead giving him the power to take charge of other people. She commands the movements, but he is still able to dominate. It’s a perfect balance, and it works so well!

What do you think of tonight’s events? Are you excited for Battleground? Will Carmella cash in? Who will win the Elimination match? Let us know your views in the comments below!

According to a report from Pro Wrestling Sheet, police have suggested that WWE Superstar Paige be charged with battery after her domestic violence incident from earlier this month involving Alberto El Patron in an Orlando airport. The decision of whether Paige will be charged will be determined by the State Attorney’s office who is reviewing the case.

A rep for the Orlando police department issued the following statement:

OPD detectives have found that probable cause exists to charge Saraya Bevis with Battery (Domestic Violence). Detectives have sent the information to the State Attorney’s Office for review and the SAO will determine whether to file charges in the case.

Paige initially stated that she was the one held for battery but at the time police only listed Alberto as a suspect:

The report also adds that the investigation into Alberto is ongoing.

As per WWE’s zero-tolerance policy regarding domestic violence, if charges are brought up to Paige, she will face another suspicion and if convented, her contract with the WWE would be terminated.

Tonight on GFW Impact Wrestling, reigning GFW Women’s Champion Sienna will not only be in action but she also has intentions on delivering a special message on tonight’s show.

Read ImpactWrestling.com‘s preview to tonight’s show below:

“The current reigning GFW Women’s Champion, Sienna, will be in action inside the six-sided ring on Thursday’s episode of IMPACT! Sienna is the self-proclaimed “classiest” Knockout in the locker room. She has proven her dominance over the division by competing and winning matches against powerhouse former Knockouts Champions Rosemary and Gail Kim. Not only will we get to see Sienna showcase her skills inside the ring, but we will also hear her on the microphone, as she has announced that she has something to say. We wonder what this announcement could be? Will it simply be her way of touting her accomplishments? Or will what she has to say throw a wrench in the Division? We will see Sienna in action on Thursday, where her intentions will be revealed.”

There will also be a follow up between the newly blossomed relationship between Grado and Laurel Van Ness after Laurel agreed to Grado’s invitation of a date.

Read ImpactWrestling.com preview below:

“In the wild world of professional wrestling, fans have become accustomed to expect the unexpected. Friends turn to rivals at the drop of a hat. Underdogs can become the World Heavyweight Champion after a quick 3-count. Old faces might unexpectedly return to the IMPACT Zone on any given night. However, this may be one surprise that no one saw coming, not even the management or locker room of Global Force Wrestling. Could there be a love connection between Scottish fan-favorite, Grado and a completely unhinged, fully disturbed, Laurel Van Ness? Following the advice of his lawyer, a desperate Grado asks out every Knockout in the locker room, with hopes that they will marry and he will be able to stay in the U.S.A. After virtually every female backstage turns down his advances, Grado has one last shot at citizenship… with Laurel Van Ness. In front of all of the fans in the IMPACT Zone, Grado asks Laurel on a date, but her answer was interrupted by Kongo Kong, who she has previously had a “relationship.” We learned after the show, that Laurel has accepted the date with Grado, and on Thursday night, we will see if there is a love connection! Will Laurel be Grado’s ticket to staying in the United States? We shall see how this interesting relationship develops.”

Rosemary on being a role model to young fans

$

Despite losing the Knockouts title at Slammiversary to Sienna, thus ending a 266 day reign as Knockouts Champion, Impact Wrestling Knockout Rosemary has full intentions of recapturing the gold.

In a recent interview with Ring Rust Radio, the Demon Assassin discusses her Slammiversary defeat, her series of stipulated matches against Jade, the importance of being a role model to young fan and gives her thoughts on WWE’s Mae Young Classic Tournament. Transcription of the interview below, courtesy of Ring Rust Radio.

On losing the Knockouts Title at Slammiversary: “Yes, with Sienna, we did lose our title and that may deter some people, but not us. Sienna has fallen to the Demon Assassin before, twice even. Most recently on the live One Night Only for the Knockouts title in January. The fact that she learned how to defeat us, the fact that she evolved, the fact that she went to a place perhaps she wouldn’t consider to go before and used tactics that she hadn’t considered and learned to defeat us, we respect that absolutely. It elevates her game which means we have to elevate ours and that is exciting, is it not?”

On her feud with Jade (Mia Yim): “Those matches were important because those matches show the length that we will go to what we want, which is absolutely limitless. We are not afraid of pain, not to say that we don’t feel pain, don’t be ridiculous. This body is flesh and blood no matter what we say. To go through a Monsters Ball, takes such mental fortitude and it helps to have a mentor such as Abyss to prepare us for that match. To go through it and take those weapon shots and going through table that perhaps are impressive when a man does it, but when a considerably smaller framed female goes through a table, it’s painful, it’s destructive, it’s breathtaking and it is proving that we are willing to go to these limits and there are no reasons for us to not do what the boys can do. I think we have proven that. As for what else we would like to do, we have yet to climb up a ladder. To ascend to new heights, both metaphorically and physically. Perhaps that will be something in our future.”

On the importance of being a role model: “There is an undeniable satisfaction in knowing that there are other children, who were like you growing up. We grew up with all boys. We had a brother and 13 male cousins, maybe a couple of girls, and we weren’t a girly girl by any means. We grew up differently and we grew up playing sports. Perhaps a social outcast? Definitely not a popular girl. To be a role model, to know the other children who aren’t cookie cutters and don’t fit the mold, who aren’t cheerleaders, aren’t the popular kids, who are a little bit bookish, nerdy, a little bit off-centered, who enjoy painting their faces, who enjoy horror movies rather of chick flicks. There is a role model for you, and we welcome you into the Hive. The Hive is a collection of all sorts of social misfits from all walks of life, all colors and creed and countries, it doesn’t matter. If you identify with what we are doing you are welcome here.”

Thoughts on WWE’s Mae Young Classic tournament: “Exposure is never a bad thing. We know several of those girls in the Mae Young classic and they deserve a spotlight. All of them deserve the chance. In this world, in any facet of this world or really any business, especially in professional wrestling as it does have the more public exposure, it is about having that door open, having that opportunity, and having that ball passed to you. You may have all the tools to run with it, but unless someone gives it to you, you may never get that opportunity. All of those girls were just waiting for that opportunity. When it is given to them, they are going to run with it and show that it was the right choice to be given that ball. Some of them have been waiting for years. Mercedes Martinez is one of the most respected women’s wrestlers on the independent circuit, and it’s finally her opportunity. All the exposure she deserves after so many years. All of us already knew, all of us knows she is the best, and finally, the rest of the world will get a glimpse of that as well. Absolutely no matter what age or how many years you have been doing this, it’s all exposure and getting that chance, but it’s up to you what you do with that chance. What bigger platform is there than an international market with the WWE and the Mae Young classic. It’s a 100 percent a wonderful thing for these girls.”

GFW Impact Write-Up (July 20th, 2017): Fight the power

$
0
0

Hola Knockout fans and welcome to this week’s GFW Impact Write-Up. I’m still trying to adjust to the new name! On this week’s program, the reigning Unified GFW Women’s and Knockouts Champion Sienna is back in action as she takes on aspiring Knockout Amber Nova.

We are also treated, as we saw last week, to an update on the proposed ‘Netflix and Chill’ date between Grado and Laurel Van Ness. Will the Scottish pro wrestler be able to avoid deportation after all? Let’s find out!

Amber Nova is already in the ring as the GFW Knockouts Champion (is that what we’re calling it now?) Sienna makes her entrance, proudly showing off both of her titles. The bells sounds off and Amber starts things off by charging right after Sienna, landing in some quick forearms.

Sienna shoves Amber away and displays her power when she catches her opponent into a fall away slam and then following up with a wheelbarrow suplex.

Sienna scoops Amber once more, this time setting up for a prolonged suplex but Amber escapes with a single knee drop to Sienna’s head. Amber tries to fight back but to no avail as Sienna strikes Amber in the midsection and hits the AK 47 to get the quick win!

Post match, Sienna grabs a mic to say she did exactly what she set out to do. You see, while Rosemary was too busy ‘petting bunnies and writing emo poetry’, Sienna was putting in work even though no one believed in her. Well, we are guilty of that here…

However, there is still one specific person who has never believed in Sienna nor did they even congratulate her on her big win from Slammiversary. We’re talking about you Mrs. Jarrett! Sienna demands that Karen comes to the ring so that she can properly show the champion some respect.

Karen’s music hits and when she meets up with Sienna, she asks Sienna what is it that she wants. Instead of asking for some congratulation wishes (its too late for those) Sienna tells Karen that she wants to see Karen get on her knees and say that she is the most dominant Knockouts Champion that has ever existed.

Karen brushes off Sienna’s threats and tries to leave the ring before things can get physical. This brought out Allie who came to the rescue by attacking Sienna with a kendo stick!

Not so fast Allie, Sienna’s partner in crime Laurel Van Ness is out next and the heels use the numbers game to beat down on Allie. A returning Rosemary comes out next and hell breaks loose: Rosemary and Sienna brawl, Laurel attacks Rosemary behind with the kendo stick and even Mrs. Jarrett got physical when she pulled Sienna by the hair.

Things comes to an end when Gail Kim runs in to help clear the ring of Sienna and Laurel. Before Sienna can huddle to the back, Karen grabs the mic again to announce that Sienna will defend her GFW Knockouts Championship against Rosemary in a Last Knockout Standing match! Hooray for someone properly getting a title rematch!

During GFW’s Last Word, Rosemary says she is more than ready for next week’s Last Knockouts Standing match.

Later in the evening, we spy Joseph Parks giving his client Grado some last minute pointers for his date with Laurel. He tells Grado to just be himself, romantic and to avoid that monster known as Kongo Kong! Laurel arrives to the date still wearing that wedding dress. Instead of offering chocolates and champagne, Grado offers up some coupons for Laurel but Laurel doesn’t mind as she has been drinking champagne all day anyway.

During the not-so-normal date, the couple share dinner, enjoy a moonlight walk and a starry night – all in the name of a citizenship! After the date, Joseph Parks meets back with Grado to ask if they’re ready to move on to the next phase: matrimony! This love story continues on but don’t forget how things ended the last time Laurel was in an Impact Wrestling wedding Grado.

Thoughts: For the most part, squash matches are never a positive thing – more so when they are in a ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ time frame. Sure Sienna picked up a win but it almost means nothing when its against someone who isn’t contracted with the promotion. At least during Amber’s previous appearance on Impact, we saw her get some offense in and actually featured during a Last Word clip. A part of me wishes we would’ve just skipped the match and just had Sienna call out Karen as is.

Putting aside the frustrations I have with these short matches, I do continue to enjoy Sienna’s growth. There’s more confidence in her tone even when calling out an authority figure like Karen. I don’t see Sienna’s feud (if we want to call it that) with Karen reaching the level of Karen versus Velvet Sky but I do think that using Karen has helped Sienna vent out.

I’m excited  for next week’s match and I hope that GFW can get back on track in giving their women the chance to shine again! Rosemary has been MIA for a few weeks and still has unfinished business with Sienna. I do wonder where Gail will fit in all of this. Surely with her pending retirement and her interference here, she will have a focal point in the months ahead. Perhaps even another shot at the title? Time will tell

As far as the Grado/Laurel saga goes, I’m not too crazy about it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against comedy in wrestling, they actually tend to be a nice break from all the seriousness of things. I just think that maybe someone else outside Laurel could’ve been used – perhaps one of the newer Knockouts to at least be re-introduced to the fans?

We know Laurel as it is and she is still in her dual role as Sienna’s sidekick. She has been making the most of her gimmick, despite how long its been already. If anything, I hope that this little chapter is used as a mends to break Laurel free from it.

Ivory shares her thoughts on Netflix’s GLOW series

Three time WWE Women’s Champion and original GLOW star Ivory was recently interviewed by USA’s “For the Win” to share her reaction of the newly adopted GLOW Netflix Series, why she believes the show has been long lasting and her thoughts on the WWE Women’s Evolution. Highlights of the interview below.

Reaction to Netflix’s GLOW Series: “I thought it was a perfect thing to make a show from. As far as telling our story and whether it was true to life, I thought they made a good mix. I’m glad it’s not a documentary because it’s probably going to be way more entertaining with the really good writers and producers who put it together.”

On why GLOW has been long-lasting: “I understand it now because I worked with the best of the best, but I didn’t get at first that people have an extreme passion for wrestling and the wrestlers. The fans are really intimately connected with each wrestler. I also think that anything that has a collection of women, there will be a sisterhood that people will relate to whether they are guys or girls. There is a power to sisterhood. I also have come to learn that we had a large gay population that appreciates GLOW. In the mid-1980s, there wasn’t a representation of gayness on television. Our glitter and our goofiness and our great costumes made in Vegas; the cheekiness and campiness of the show, it turns out little boys who were gay coveted our act. I went on one of the GLOW cruises last February and all the fans were gay guys. We had so much fun together. That was a new education to me. They said, ‘My God, you were a pinnacle person in my life as a youngster. I felt like you guys were me on TV.’ That gave it richer importance in my life to hear that. There is a real power to what you represent when you go in front of people.”

Thoughts on WWE’s Women’s Evolution: “They’re wrestling. They are entertaining to me now. A few of them had different types of bodies. I was very pleased to see that things have come far, far away from the Diva Search days where it was, ‘Let’s have a bunch of girls in bikinis flop around and look stupid so the public can vote them on or of the show.’ ”

Ivory also discusses which of Netflix’s GLOW characters she sees herself in, first training to wrestle and first arriving to the WWE.

On this day in history:

July 23rd, 2000 | Lita and Trish Stratus took their heated feud to the next level at Fully Loaded 2000, facing off in an Intergender Tag Team match. Lita teamed with Matt and Jeff Hardy, while Trish was paired with her T&A cohorts, Test and Albert. Team Xtreme won the match, thanks in large part to Lita’s daredevil style. Trish would turn the tables post-match, though, T&A isolating her so Trish could get in some licks with a leather strap. Lita got plenty of revenge later on, attacking Trish with a strap of her own while she was at ringside managing Val Venis.

Battleground Predictions: Five-Way Elimination Match

Tonight at WWE’s Battleground a new number one contender to the SmackDown Women’s Title will be crowned as Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, Lana, Natalya and Tamina square off in a Five-Way Elimination Match. Which Superstar will meet the SmackDown Women’s Champion Naomi at SummerSlam? The Diva Dirt team weighs in

Abir: I believe that we’re going to get a Tamina victory. We’ll see her and Charlotte as the final two, and then Lana will get in Charlotte’s way to lead on to a Tamina win and a Lana/Charlotte feud.

Alex: SmackDown is supposed to be the land of opportunities and there’s one woman out of the 5 that hasn’t had her opportunity and that’s Tamina. Say what you want about her ring work, but arguably she was the MVP in both MITB matches. She’s not had a title match in a good couple years and now I think is the time for her to shine. I’m all for Lana becoming her manager too, so hopefully this is the chance for Ms. Snuka to get that push I’ve been waiting for!

Josue: While Charlotte winning would be a safe bet tonight, I think the WWE are going to swerve things around tonight and award this match to Tamina. She’s been picking up some steam as of late and there has to be some kind of end game to this sudden allegiance with Lana that will play out tonight.

Matthew: Charlotte can get the win. I don’t want to see another match between Lana and Naomi.

BREAKDOWN: 0 for Becky Lynch, 1 for Charlotte Flair, 0 for Lana, 0 for Natalya, 3 for Tamina.

Tonight at WWE’s Battleground, a Five-Way Elimination match between Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, Lana, Natalya and Tamina will determine the new number one contender to Naomi’s SmackDown Women’s Championship at SummerSlam.

Read WWE.com’s preview to tonight’s match below:

“As the Women’s Evolution carries on, history is seemingly made on a weekly basis. At WWE Battleground, yet another bit of history will be etched. Five of the top Superstars in the SmackDown LIVE Women’s division will square off in a Five-Way Elimination Match, with the winner going on to SummerSlam to challenge Naomi in the first-ever SmackDown Women’s Title Match in SummerSlam history. Following the Women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match(es) and Naomi overcoming Lana in a series of title contests, matters in the division needed to be reset. With so much talent surging and SummerSlam on the horizon, SmackDown LIVE management decided that the fairest way to determine Naomi’s opponent at SummerSlam would be to put five of the roster’s best on the Battleground (literally) and see who prevailed. Will Charlotte’s Flair big-match pedigree pay dividends as she continues her quest to become the first Superstar in history to hold the Divas Championship as well as both the Raw and SmackDown Women’s Titles? Or will Becky Lynch or Natalya be able to use their years of experience as to elevate themselves toward SummerSlam glory? And will the seemingly brewing alliance between Tamina and Lana play a factor in the contest?”

Battleground Results: Natalya wins number one contendership to the SmackDown Women’s Title

Tonight at WWE’s Battleground, Natalya became the new number one contender to Naomi’s SmackDown Women’s Title.

Natalya won the title opportunity during tonight’s Five Way Elimination match that included Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, Lana and Tamina.

At the start of the match, a scramble between the five Superstars broke out but the team of Lana and Tamina worked together to clear the ring of their opponents. The duo would then target Charlotte specifically, using the numbers game to their advantage until a returning Becky Lynch made the save.

After coming to Charlotte’s aid, Becky took on Charlotte one-on-one until Natalya found her way back to the ring. Natalya would try to score the first elimination over Charlotte via Sharpshooter but Lana made the rescue – in an attempt to pick up the win for herself.

Instead, Lana found herself caught in Becky’s Dis-Arm-Her to which Tamina was able to make the save for. Switching gears, Becky trapped the same hold onto Tamina, thus forcing the second generation Superstar to tap out for the first elimination of the match. Becky reapplied the Dis-Arm-Her hold onto Lana for the second elimination of the match.

Just seconds later, the third elimination occurred when Natalya was able to roll up  Becky from behind with a handful of tights, leaving Natalya and Charlotte as the final two competitors to the match.

After nearly putting Natalya away with a powerbomb, Charlotte would go for a top rope moonsault but Natalya countered out by getting her knees up. Natalya followed up by throwing Charlotte’s head to the bottom turnbuckle for the win.

Post match, the SmackDown Women’s Champion Naomi, who was sitting at commentary throughout the match, entered the ring in an attempt to offer a congratulated handshake to Natalya but it was turned down.

Natalya will get her shot to Women’s Title at WWE’s SummerSlam, which takes place Sunday, August 20th.
