Great Balls of Fire Results: Alexa Bliss retains the Raw Women’s Title

Tonight at WWE’s Great Balls of Fire, Alexa Bliss was able to hold on to her Raw Women’s Title against Sasha Banks via a count-out victory.

At the start of both Superstars traded blows with Sasha managing to take down Alexa with a deep arm drag. Alexa faked-out a broken arm which only served a small distraction for Alexa to deliver a shot to Sasha.

Midway through the match, Sasha was able to trap Alexa in the Bank Statement but the champion was able to escape. Alexa slipped to the outside, looking to walk out of the match by heading to the back which caused for Sasha to chase after her.

During the chase, Alexa managed to knock Sasha off the ring apron, hurting Sasha’s back. When both Superstars returned to the ring, Alexa continued to target Sasha’s back. Sasha battled back and was able to bide some time by suplexing the champion to a turnbuckle.

As Alexa fought back she climbed the top rope, looking to connect the Twisted Bliss. Sasha countered by getting her knees up and would go on to connect the Bank Statement but the champion once again escaped the hold via rope break.

Both Superstars found their way back to the outside where Sasha was able to send Alexa to the barricade. From there, Alexa would remain on the outside until the referee count outed her out thus awarding Sasha the win but allowed for Alexa to retain the Raw Women’s Title.

Post match, an angered Sasha went after Alexa leading to a brawl all the way to the commentary announcement table that ended with Sasha delivering a high flying double knee shot to Alexa.

What did you think of the match?

Great Balls of Fire in Review: The Boss lights the Fire!

For weeks, we have laughed and poked fun at the WWE’s newest PPV title, but last night’s inaugural ‘Great Balls of Fire’ was a surprise shocker. Our gutsy Sasha Banks has stepped up to the plate to take on our cunning RAW Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss. So, what happened and where are we left now?

Ahead of the night’s showdown, we’re treated to a pre-match build up promo that showcases Sasha’s rise through the tumultuous RAW women’s division to certify herself at the #1 contender. Alexa is showcased as the sneaky and manipulative unexpected Champion, while Sasha is seen to be a fighter that wants to reclaim her position at the top of the division.

On the pre-show, Dana Brooke has joined the panel to discuss her thoughts on the women’s match. She talks about how Banks and Bliss have hated each other since their NXT days – one goes one way and one goes the other way. She calls it a problem of jealousy and competition… but is interrupted by Emma? She whispers over and tells her that they need to talk after her interview.

Alexa and Sasha have never really got to go one-on-one since Alexa’s makeover into a mega draw for the company, and the crowd is warm as they head into this match. It starts off with both competitors sizing each other up – Sasha trying to stay on the defence to watch for any of Alexa’s tricks, while Alexa tries to stop Sasha getting out the firing blocks with her usual speedy offence.

The first literal twist of the match is when Sasha twists Alexa’s arm and send her down to the mat. Alexa then reveals her disjointed arm that looks like it’s completely mangled… gross. Yes, I know we’ve seen this trick before, but the crowd still aww and gasp as Alexa screams in pain. However, this provides Alexa with her prime opportunity as Sasha’s guard comes down as she shows her concern for her opponent’s arm. Alexa hits her with a massive forearm and now “The Goddess” of WWE is in control.

After a bit of offence, Sasha now finds a chance to turn the match around when she manages to hit a Backstabber on Alexa, but she isn’t able to lock in the crossface submission which allows Alexa to roll out the ring. Alexa then tries to run for it, but again the wiley Alexa turns it into an opportunity to throw Sasha’s game out the window, because she is knocked off the apron and takes a tough fall to the outside, bumping off the apron on her way down.

So now, Miss Bliss is back in control of the match and her target is Sasha’s back. The ‘insult to injury’, backbreakers, a couple back submissions and stomps – all aimed at slowing down Sasha! When Alexa tries to cause more damage with a suplex, Sasha manages to reverse it and throw Alexa into the buckles feet first. So now, the plucky Boss has time to recover – she hits a run of offence, including a back body drop and running knee that gives her a near fall.

Alexa then stops Sasha’s run in its tracks by hitting a sunset powerbomb in the corner for another near fall. Alexa throws a little tantrum, but she’s ready to put her opponent away as she climbs to the top rope. She sets off for her Twisted Bliss, but is met by Sasha’s knees! Sasha takes advantage and locks in the Banks Statement! The crowd are super hyped as this could be the moment that Miss Bliss is finally stopped… but it’s not to be, as she manages to grab the bottom rope to break the hold!

Alexa slips outside the ring and tries to recuperate. Sasha tries to get her back in, but gets her face smashed into the apron and also ends up outside the ring. Alexa attempts to throw Sasha into the barricade, but Sasha counters it and it’s Alexa who ends up taking the damage. Sasha throws Alexa back into the ring, but Alexa slips right out the other side. Once again, Sasha tries to bring Alexa back into the ring, but is met with one final slap. The referee continues the count and reaches 10. The winner of the match via count-out is Sasha Banks, but the Champion remains Alexa Bliss!

Oh no, we’re not done yet! Sasha looks close to tears, but the tears turn to anger as she snatches Alexa as she tries to walk up the ramp. Sasha then throws her into the stage and the crowd at on their feet! However, Alexa manages to turn things around by smacking Sasha’s head into the announcers’ table. She then removes the board and sets Sasha up for what looks like a her signature DDT. Before she can do it, Sasha works her way out and knocks Alexa off the table and onto the floor below. Sasha then makes her final move, by launching herself off the table and flooring Alexa with her Meteora double knees!

She may not be walking out as the Champion, but the Banks VS Bliss feud is far from over!

Following the event, Sasha appeared on RAW Talk and she’s angry! She had Alexa beat, she’s proven once again that Alexa’s she’s a coward and still wants to show that she’s better. When asked about their problems, Sasha targets Alexa’s fakeness – claiming that she just claimed to love wrestling to get a ticket to Hollywood. She states that while not everyone needs to come from the Indies, everyone needs to respect the business, which Alexa doesn’t do. She demands a rematch and hopes that she’ll get an answer on RAW.

Thoughts: Damn, anyone got a mop because Sasha dropped that teapot on RAW Talk. Before I even get to that, let me just start by saying that Great Balls of Fire was a really nice surprise and has finally been a spark in the right direction for the RAW division… if they do it right.

So first things first is the match. I feel that fans across the world are split between Alexa’s ring abilities, but last night was a very good solid showing. She works well with Sasha, it makes for believable power offence, they have good agility sequences together and it was just fun to see the dynamic of Sasha trying to outsmart Alexa and Alexa trying to outsmart Sasha. It’s definitely a match-up that I would love to see again.

Now, whether we believe there’s legitimate beef between the two or not, we know that they needed to tap into something to get a storyline going. Sure we have had this “Indy VS Diva” feud happen in many programs across the years, but having this as an internal NXT feud that has been escalated to the main roster gives it a new feel – and it’s a feud that can extend across the roster. Homegrown NXT VS NXT Superstar, the people who have to work from scratch at NXT VS the ones who should have had it given to them on a plate. It’s a nice play on things and can finally light some fire under a good legitimate storyline (much better than Bayley falling in love).

Plus, I can’t be the only one that finds it exciting when two rumoured Superstars have to work a program together. 80% of the time, it brings out the best in each other’s work because the intensity reaches a whole new level. Can you imagine the promos that we could get? Tonight also showed that there’s a strong level of intensity between the two in this match, which only makes things more interested.

My thoughts overall is that I’m happy that this feud is continuing. I was quite pleased with the quality of the match and I know that these two can do more. I definitely thought that this was going to be a 2 week filler, but that post-match action shows that this isn’t done. Hopefully, they don’t just job out the rest of the division – no pun intended, but they have ignited the fire for this feud and we can see some really good stuff moving forward. Here’s to hoping they don’t make Sasha do a ‘This Is Your Life segment for Alexa.

Did you enjoy last night’s match? What are your thoughts on Sasha’s comments on RAW Talk? What are Emma and Dana up to? Comment below guys and girls!

Today in History: Lita and Trish Stratus’s street fight gets censored

On this day in history:

July 10th, 2000 | In one of their first one-on-one matches, Lita and Trish Stratus were booked to compete in a Street Fight. Despite the promises of the stipulation, however, the women never made it outside of the ring. The match came to a screeching halt when Lita, deciding to humiliate Trish rather than just beat the tar out of her, took her opponent’s top off. This brought out Steven Richards, who covered Trish in a sheet and hurried her to the back. The Right to Censor was only a few weeks old at the time and thus far only consisted of Richards, but this moment proved to be a good example of one of the group’s chief motives: censor “scantily clad” women.

What are your memories of this moment?

One night after WWE’s Great Balls of Fire, Sasha Banks looks to earn a Raw Women’s Title rematch against Alexa Bliss after the champion took a loss via count-out.

Read WWE.com‘s preview to tonight’s show below:

Sasha Banks technically defeated Alexa Bliss at WWE Great Balls of Fire, but The Boss still fell short of her fourth Raw Women’s Championship as the victory was a Count-out, which means Bliss retained her title via champion’s advantage. Given all Sasha had to go through to even face Alexa in the first place, she’ll understandably be looking for a rematch – especially if her post-match beatdown on “The Goddess of WWE” is any indication.

Will Raw General Manager Kurt Angle be sympathetic to her cause? And what will the rest of the Raw Women’s division — none of whom have much love lost for Little Miss Bliss — have to say about the situation?

Discuss the show in the comments!

July 11th, 2013 | After losing a Last Knockout Standing match to Taryn Terrell at Slammiversary, Gail Kim looked to even the score and earn a shot at Mickie James‘s Knockouts Title in a Ladder match. Taryn was more than capable of keeping up with Gail, taking punishment and dishing it out as well. El Rey Network still mum on Season Four details of Lucha Underground

Though Season Three of Lucha Underground is currently airing on the El Rey Network, there are still scarce details about the status of the show and the probability of a Season Four. Current episodes airing were taped a year ago and talent are squirming to get any details at all.

Daniel Tibbets, President of El Rey, recently spoke to ESPN about the show and revealed that the network is currently “heavily focused” on the rest of this current season:

“We’re in the middle of season 3. That’s where our focus is. We’re doing everything from a programming, a marketing, promotion, to deliver on a very successful, very engaging season 3. So it’s really just a function of timing. It’s just not time to talk about season 4 because we’re actually in the middle of a season. Again, just from a network programming standpoint, you normally don’t do that. That’s where we are right now is we’ve got 19 more episodes of season 3 to get through. To make successful. And then you bet we’re gonna want to talk about a season 4. We’re committed to the series. It’s a wonderful brand and it fits El Rey. But let it get through season 3, let us make that the best and then we can have a conversation about season 4.”

When asked about the future of the series, Tibbets said the network is looking into all its options:

“We are certainly looking at a variety of logical extensions for the show, the characters, the brand. All of that makes sense. When you have something that fans are passionate about … we have a site, El Rey Nation, where fans can write us. I read all of it. Every comment that is put on El Rey Nation, I look at, and we respond and we have great dialogue with our fans. We get a lot of comments, suggestions, like we’d like [Lucha Underground] to be longer. Absolutely. That’d be super cool. However, we do talk to a lot of fans and we do a lot of research and we have that conversation, but people really love that one-hour format. The short answer is yes, we’re always looking to explore more ways to work with the show, the brand and our partners, and at the same time we’re also listening to the fans and looking to see what they recommend. What they would like to see. When is the right time to do that? All of it’s on the table for us to continue to explore.”

Tibbets also talks about his involvement with the show, how unique LU is compared to other wrestling shows and more.

Read the full interview here.

Lucha Underground is no stranger to delayed seasons and hiatuses. During Season One network execs were concerned about the funding for Season Two. However, Season Two was ultimately green lit towards the end of Season One’s run.

Earlier this year Season Three went on mid-season hiatus with rumors and speculation abound that the brand was prepping for Season Four. Instead, the show began a festival touring circuit and some of its talent have appeared at Comic Conventions and wrestling fan shows.

Season Three returned from its mid-season break a few weeks ago and episodes are airing Wednesdays at 8 pm ET on the El Rey Network.

Episodes can also be purchased on iTunes and Seasons One and Two are available on Netflix and Amazon.

What do you think about this news? Are you worried about the possibility of a delayed Season 4? What do you want to see moving forward? Sound off in the comments below.

RAW Redux (July 10th, 2017): Bayley surprises Bliss!

via GIPHY

It’s getting warmer out there (well not so much in the UK), but the Great Balls of Fire event certainly has ignited the spark as we head into our hottest event of the year, Summerslam! There was some unleft business, there was tea being spilled and I finally felt intrigued as a RAW viewer to finally tune into the women’s division! So let’s see what happened on this week’s RAW Redux!

This week we have the BFF team of Bayley and GBOF’s unsuccessful challenger Sasha Banks, but they both have unfinished with their opponents this week: Nia Jax and RAW Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss. A rematch from last week, where Bayley was taken out of the match half way through by Nia crushing her into the barricade.

Sasha already has her sights on Alexa as soon as the bell tolls, causing a quick game of cat and mouse until she tags Nia into the match. The popular BFFs know how to handle Nia after months of these encounters and their team work manages to ground the behemoth early on in the match as we head to a commercial break.

When we come back from the match, Sasha has got the better of Alexa and once again the face duo’s team work is seamless as they work over the Champion. Things take a bit of a turn when Nia is tagged into the match and she halts Bayley’s momentum after a distraction by Alexa on the apron. This is where the match starts to slow down and we see Nia’s more typical slow and methodical offence as she slowly ragdolls Bayley and gets Alexa to add extra punishment.

Nia tags Alexa into the match and they seem to try organise a tag team move. Instead, Alexa turns around to hit Sasha, who dodges it and jumps off the apron. As she tries to get into the ring, she’s stopped by the referee, which allows Nia to pancake Bayley in the corner. Alexa then manages to knock Sasha off the apron and connects with her Twisted Bliss on Bayley! 1.. 2.. No! Sasha breaks the count, but is then tossed out the ring by Nia. A sitting target, Nia attempts to charge into Sasha who is propped up against the ring barricade, but Sasha rolls out the way! The monster is floored and the focus is back on the two in the ring, Bayley rolls up Alexa and gets the 1.. 2.. 3! Bayley has now pinned the Champion!

The Champ is shocked, Nia is angry, but the BFF team have smiles beaming across their faces! So now, this has spiced up the title picture!

Elsewhere on the card, Maryse was awarded a ‘Mizzie’ by her husband, The Miz – so it looks like they are working on the same page now!

Meanwhile, Alicia Fox was ringside to see her boyfriend Noam Dar and Cruiserweight Champion Neville come up short against the team of Akira Tozawa and Cedric Alexander.

Thoughts: So it looks like Bayley is being added to the picture here and again – this is a good decision, so long as Sasha is the one to go tweener. The Banks/Bliss feud is good on paper, but having someone like Bayley take a backseat will be very detrimental to her character… which is already suffering. Sure we could argue that Nia should also be involved, but her character has a safe gimmick that isn’t so tentative. Each week, we hear more and more smarks booing Bayley and all the horny guys cheering Alexa. Now, this isn’t the fault of the women at hand, but it goes to show that the booking of their characters isn’t good enough.

Sasha has an absolutely solid fanbase and is still getting strong face pops, but this wasn’t the character that made her popular. On the flip side, we have Bayley with her same schtick, but not being able to get that empathy with the crowd. Toss in a little bit of Alexa, who is still working her way up as the top heel and we have a very interesting feud here that can help all of these women take it to the next level.

Match-wise, this was a little forgettable since it was so short and practically a rematch of last week. It does once again irk me, because we know we have so many other women on the roster ready and raring to go… but it looks like they will all be the jobber squad over the next few weeks, which only further creates the problem that I’ve said for the last couple of months… the RAW two-tiered division. It’s safe to say that on paper, I’d much rather watch what we’re going to see on Main Event over seeing this tag team combination match for the gazillionth time.

Do you think Bayley should be injected into the title feud? Do you think it should have been left between Banks and Bliss? Do you want the other women involved in the title scene? Sound off below!

Get to Know: the Girlhood Dream of Jayel Cotto

$

0

Jayel Cotto, a Puerto Rican born, and New York raised talent, has been a fan of the wrestling industry since childhood. With a wrestling fanatic as a brother, and living in a tough neighbourhood, wrestling has almost been a way of life for the rising talent.

Diva Dirt recently sat down with Cotto, as we tried to get to know her a little better. We asked her about her upbringing, inspirations from the industry and more – and she had a lot to say!

How did you first become attracted to professional wrestling?

When I was younger [the Bronx] was a very dangerous area, so my parents – especially my mom – would keep me and my older brother inside for most of the day. So, my brother and I would spend every day playing video games, watching cartoons, and anime. He would try to get me to watch wrestling all the time, but for a three-year old little girl, muscular men, clowns, and monsters weren’t her cup of tea just yet. He finally got me to sit still for a match, the British Bulldog vs Shawn Michaels for the Intercontinental Championship on Saturday Night’s Main Event – I was hooked! That match was very different and it really wasn’t the usual big man on big man match that WWF would show most of the time. Shawn Michaels brought high flying and acrobatics to the mix and that’s what kept me interested and wanting to continue to watch wrestling. Now, I go back to that match to study the story, movement, timing, and characters to make sure that I also get all of these things in my own matches because I want to keep people interested and always watching.

Which wrestler do you idolise the most, and why?

Growing up of course I would watch my idol Shawn Michaels. HBK was so charismatic and so skillful. He made you believe in everything he did. He would always keep you interested and would always give his all in every match. I think that’s what made him stand out and to me he was always ahead of his time. He will always be hands down my favorite and the greatest of all time. There are also guys like Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, and Chris Jericho who were not only freak athletes, but had so much fire and passion that always made me look forward to watching their matches. They kept you guessing and wondering what they were going to do next. Edge was also a favorite to watch he always reinvented himself to get to where he wanted to be. I’m more of an old school kind of girl, watching wrestlers like Rowdy Piper, Mr. Perfect, and The American Dream Dusty Rhodes is always a learning experience and I will always go back to them.

Which women wrestlers are your favorites, and why?

My favorite woman wrestlers were Alundra Blayze, Bull Nakano, Jazz, and Jacqueline. Jacqueline played a big role in women not needing to be just beautiful, but women who can get in there with the guys and rough them up. These women taught me that “strong and powerful” can also be “beautiful.”

How did you manage to get your first step into the industry?

I was introduced to the wrestling business by a Kmag brother Eddie Jimenez whose one of the black belts in the Tae Kwon Do dojo that I train in. Every day I would go to train and would get lost in conversation before and after our classes with all the little boys about wrestling and what was going on at the moment. Eddie heard a conversation with me and the boys about wrestling predictions for a PPV and how I wished I could follow my dream. He then told me he worked as a security guard for a show and knew someone who had a wrestling school. The very next day he picked me up and took me to Gleason’s Gym to have an interview with Johnny Rodz. I joined the World of Unpredictable Wrestling and have trained there since.

What’s your favorite match that you’ve competed in?

My favorite match to compete in will always be my next match. I think there is always room for learning and growing. This business has the ability to give you a canvas to work with every time you step into a wrestling ring and that’s the beauty of it. To me my best match will always be the match I have tomorrow because I will be a different wrestler and will bring something different that I didn’t bring today. Every day I’m studying, whether it’s in the ring, watching wrestling, or even talking to my mentors I am always learning and figuring out what to bring to the next match.

What are your favorite memories from the wrestling industry?

I think the best memories I have is all the little puzzles pieces I had to put together to progress in wrestling. To go from not knowing how to lock up to now putting together a match will always be my favorite kind of memory. To look back at yourself when you first started to now is a pretty cool feeling. In a few years from now I’ll be able to look back at my current status and ability in wrestling and just say “Wow, look at how much you’ve grown.”

What are some of the greatest challenges that you’ve gone through in your career?

Some of the greatest challenges that I had to endure was to mentally prepare myself and to keep myself going even when I thought I couldn’t anymore. In this business everything takes so much time and it gets frustrating, but if you learn to have fun with it you will succeed. Turning a dream into an actual reality was a challenge in itself. Sometimes you just have to shut the doubt out and just got for it.

Could you describe your character to our readers, and explain what makes you different from your colleagues?

My character in all consists of different types of fighting. I’m a second dan black belt in Tae Kwon Do, a boxer, and practiced the art of Ju Jitsu. Mostly, I have a lot of kicks in my arsenal and that’s something I’m the most comfortable doing since I’ve practiced Tae Kwon Do for sixteen years. The thing that sets me apart from other women wrestlers is the fact that I’ve been fighting all of my life. I know what it feels like to have two competitors in the middle of the ring to perform. With my striking and my ability to know how to take someone down it has been easier for me to transition into wrestling. Even though I’m 4’11 martial arts taught me that at heart you can be bigger and tougher. You can have confidence and show that you won’t back down from anyone. That you can dance with even the best of them if you fight for it.

What are your biggest career goals that you hope to reach in the future?

There are few goals in wrestling that I have. One is to be the someone little girls look up to and want to be. Not only little girls, but little boys as well. I want to show that it doesn’t matter where you come from or what you are, if you’re rich or poor, you should still follow your dream. I want to show that I belong in an era where women can kick doors down and be respected and to show that they’re here to stay. I always want to get better at wrestling and always make sure that people get what they deserve when they pay to see me because that’s what it’s all about.

Since you aim to be an inspiration, what message are you trying to send out?

I just want to let everyone know that you can be anything you want. Be different, be weird, be the best chess player in the world, or create your own business. If your dream is to become a wrestler, or an actor, or a baseball player, then do that. Never regret anything in your life and never be the person who never chased their dream. Follow what your heart wants and always keep your passion and desire, it’s what will drive you to get there. Also, to never forget that the most successful people in the world were the ones who failed the most. Make your mistakes and learn from them.

What are your thoughts on the current “Women’s Revolution” in WWE?

Women’s Revolution! What a change, finally women get to show that they could be just as good as the guys if not better especially in the wrestling business. It’s amazing to see the transition in fans and when they’re talking about women’s wrestling. To read on how women’s matches aren’t the “bathroom break” match anymore and actually the match they came to see is honorable. I’m very grateful for all the women who worked hard to get to this point and to break down barriers to give women like me a chance to show what they could do and what they could bring to the table. To show that women are powerful, strong, smart-as well as beautiful really warms my heart and always puts a smile on my face when I think of it. It’s a movement that no one or nothing can stop and it has given women wrestlers around the world including myself a reason to be different, to be athletic and skilled.

WWE has taped several weeks worth of NXT leading up to NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn. Spoilers below.

Spoiler

Airing July 26th:

* Ember Mood defeated Lei’D Tapa. Short stiff match, lots of kicks from Ember. Ember hits the Eclipse for the win. Post match, Ember says she wants NXT Women’s Champion Asuka at Takeover. Ember says Asuka wants competition, and she will give Asuka what she wants. Says she’s ready to defeat the undefeated, but is Asuka ready for Ember Moon?

* NXT Tag Team Champions The Authors of Pain out for a match against 2 jobbers. As the Authors come down the ramp, Nikki Cross cuts them off. Killian Dain and Alexander Wolfe hit the ring and destroy the jobbers, and then brawl with the Authors. Authors of Pain send SANitY to the outside, and Nikki holds them back from going back after the AoP.

Airing August 2nd:

* NXT Women’s Champion Asuka is out for a promo and says she will fight Ember Moon at Brooklyn. Says she’s beaten Ember before, she will beat her again, and Ember is not ready for Asuka. Ember interrupts and says she knows that she’s ready, the people know she’s ready, and Asuka knows she’s ready. Ember says underneath all her arrogance, Asuka knows the truth is that Asuka isn’t ready for Ember Moon. Asuka offers a handshake, then slaps Ember. They brawl and Asuka gets the better of Ember and sends her out of the ring. While Asuka gloats, Ember goes to the top and hits the Eclipse to a huge pop to leave Asuka laying.

* Sonya Deville defeated Jenna Van Muscles (not announced by any name). Sloppy match, Sonya taps her out for the win.

Airing August 9th:

* Nikki Cross interrupts the NXT chant and calls out NXT Tag Team Champions The Authors of Pain. SAnitY joins her. As the AoP head down, Eric Young jumps Rezar and slams him into the rail at rampside. He zip ties Rezar to the rail and SAnitY does a 3-on-1 beatdown on Akam. Rezar breaks the railing free and comes to the ring dragging the rail with him, but SAnitY just destroy him.

Airing August 16th:

* Andrade “Cien” Almas (w/Thea Trinidad) defeated No Way Jose. Okay match. The story was anytime Andrade tried to play around, Thea berated him to be serious. Andrade went for a cover after the double knees in the corner, but Thea yelled for him to finish Jose, so Andrade picked him up and hit El Idolo for the pin. Post match, Thea goes to the announce table and grabs a mic. She says he deserves the spotlight, the biggest spotlight he can have. So if the “NXT Universe’s golden boy” Johnny Gargano is looking for an opponent for Brooklyn, he’s got one.

* NXT GM William Regal out for a contract signing. Regal introduces Ember Moon and Asuka. Ember says Asuka’s had an incredible run and has beaten the best, even surpassing Goldberg. Crowd breaks into an Asuka chant in the cadence of the Goldberg chant. Ember says she’s only taken shortcuts with one person in her reign, and that person was Ember. Ember says she’s better than she’s ever been because of Asuka and at Brooklyn, she’s going to end the reign of Asuka and be the next NXT Women’s Champion. Asuka signs with no comment. Regal makes the match official. Asuka then starts ranting at Ember in Japanese, with one line roughly translating to Asuka saying she would put Ember in the hospital. Asuka and Ember stare down to end the segment.

* Ruby Riot defeated Billie Kay (w/Peyton Royce). Lots of over-the-top comedic support from Peyton at ringside. Mediocre match. Ruby gets the win with her finisher. Peyton grabs the mic post match and says all Ruby’s done is prove lightning strikes once even for a gross tatted person like her, and she’ll never be Iconic.

SmackDown Redux (July 11th, 2017): Taking down the Queen

Backstage in Mr Shane McMahon’s office, we see the SmackDown Live Commissioner talking to Naomi. The champ asks about who her next challenger will be, with the hope that it isn’t Lana, yet again. Charlotte Flair then walks into the room, sharing the same feelings as Naomi about Lana. Becky Lynch is the next woman in the ring, jokingly (but not really) stating that she deserves to be the number one contender. Natalya, Lana and Tamina soon fill the room – and it appears that Shane called them all in for a chat. He announces that at Battleground, Charlotte, Becky, Tamina, Natalya and (to everyone’s surprise) Lana will compete in a Five-Way Elimination match. The winner of the contest will face the champion Naomi for her title at SummerSlam. Charlotte is less than pleased that Lana will be in the match, but Tamina immediately jumps to her new friend’s defense, as does Natalya. She says that Charlotte is just like Lana, as all of her opportunities have been handed to her – except it’s only through her family history. Lynch then gets involved and insinuates the same for Bret – or, Nattie, as she corrects herself.

After noticing the tension, McMahon introduces the match for the night, as the team of Natalya and Tamina will take on Charlotte and Becky!

After the five women leave the room, with Naomi and Shane still standing Carmella enters, with some papers in hand. She gives McMahon a document from her attorney, insisting that James Ellsworth’s suspension is unjust. But instead of taking it seriously, McMahon rips it to shreds. Yikes!

Now onto the match!

The match starts off with Becky Lynch and Tamina, with the Lass Kicker taking charge. Charlotte is then tagged in and takes ahold of their lead. Tamina then manages to knock Flair down, giving herself the opportunity to tag in Natalya. Once Becky is tagged in she soon finds herself being beaten down by her opponents. This seems to take place for a while. The Lass Kicker is cornered, beaten and kept away from Charlotte. However, after kicking out of Natalya’s attempted Sharpshooter, Lynch jumps up and tags in her friend.

Once Charlotte takes down Natalya, Lana comes out, distracting Miss Flair. Whilst this happens, Natalya quickly tags in Tamina and plays dead. So when Charlotte comes back to place the Figure Eight Leglock, the legal Tamina superkicks her head, and pins her: 1-2-3.

In the SmackDown Fallout, Flair discusses the upcoming pay-per-view match. Despite her and Becky having a better bond than Tamina and Lana, Charlotte will put that aside and focus on becoming the first ever female “Triple Crown” champion (which is including both current Women’s belts and either the Divas or the NXT Women’s championship).

Throughout the night we see Maria Kanellis and Mike Kanellis are seen looking for Sami Zayn. And when they find him, they demand an apology. Zayn insists that he’s already apologized, but the Kanellis’ don’t think so. And after he asks the two what they even are doing at SmackDown, he receives a slap from Mrs Kanellis, and a vase to the back of the head from Mr Kanellis. Ouch.

Thoughts: So we have quite a bit to discuss here. But first, let’s get on to Becky and Charlotte’s relationship. I know they’ve somewhat bonded over the past few weeks, but why have they gone from enemies battling to best buds purely because they were made to team together once or twice? I understand the fact that both women are faces, but it’s pretty peculiar that we’re supposed to believe that they have the same bond as the Bella Twins without any connection between their previous storyline and now? It may have been a little over a year ago, but Charlotte’s personality hasn’t changed an awful lot since then, despite no longer being a bad guy. A backstage segment of the two discussing their relationship would’ve been appreciated, but it will do, I guess.

Now onto the pay-per-view match.

It’s pretty weird that we’re having yet another Fatal-Five-Way match at a pay-per-view. SmackDown does a good job at making the women all feel equal by doing this, but sometimes it does feel a bit overdone. And what makes it worse is that despite losing three times, Lana is still being placed on the same level as the other women whom have all gone through two Money In The Bank Ladder matches (not title matches!). And on top of that, Carmella isn’t being included at all. She may be Miss Money In The Bank but since when did holding the briefcase stop a Superstar from becoming the number one contender for a title? Seth Rollins was in multiple title matches – and number one contender title matches – whilst he had his briefcase. But that doesn’t apply to Carmella? Weird.

And speaking of Carmella, SmackDown have really missed the trick here. After (temporarily) removing Ellsworth from the equation, this was the Princess of Staten Island’s time to step up. She’s been killing it on the mic lately, but with James by her side, the heat hasn’t transpired all that well. So with him now gone, Carmella had the perfect opportunity to talk with the crowd and get them to hate her – and just her. But instead she’s made to show up backstage for two minutes and then goes off screen for the rest of the night. No in-ring mic segment, no interference with a match, not even a basic backstage interview. If Carmella is to soar as the first ever female briefcase holder, then she needs to be given opportunities to do so. She can’t be made to rely on Ellsworth, whom only really has heat on himself, rather than shifting it to her. Carmella needs to fly solo – and this perfect opportunity was unfortunately missed.

However, there is a good point to this show. And that is the Tamina and Lana alliance. Instead of Tamina being the muscle that helps somebody else get the victory, she has Lana sneakily give Snuka the win. Tamina is now using her muscle to get herself to the top, whilst Lana is doing what she does best – staying on the outside and interfering when necessary. This is what we need to see Tamina do. And to see her be the first person to pin Miss Flair since the Shakeup is definitely aiding her dominance. Tamina is one to watch, and having Lana by her side is giving her that heel edge she needs. It’s brilliant.

For the upcoming match, I don’t see Tamina, Charlotte or Lana winning. Although they may be the biggest storyline coming up right now, they may have their feud settled on the side at SummerSlam whilst the title picture is between Naomi and Becky or Natalya.

Charlotte seems to have it in for Lana, as she was the most vocal with her disliking of her. And with Lana being the reason she lost tonight’s match, it won’t come as a shock if the two (or three) find themselves properly feuding in the near future.

And with the title being on the line at SummerSlam – it could be the perfect opportunity for Miss ‘Mella to get her shining moment.

Naomi has been holding the crown for over 100 days now, so by SummerSlam, she’ll definitely have a pretty lengthy reign. Fans are by her side, loving everything she does. And if she is to overcome a big battle at the biggest party of the Summer, Carmella’s cash-in could be a pretty devastating blow. It just depends on how things play out.

WWE could reiterate the Welcoming Committee’s attack where fans were disappointed that a fair battle was put to a devastating end. Here, Becky could be the challenger and a face vs face feud could definitely grab people’s attention.

Or, Natalya can be the evil opponent that Naomi overcomes, and Carmella’s cash-in can truly take away her first SummerSlam moment.

Today in History: Awesome Kong vs. Taylor Wilde, Angelina Love vs. Gail Kim at Victory Road 2008

On this day in history:

July 13th, 2008 | After bursting onto the scene in an open challenge match against Awesome Kong, Taylor Wilde managed to win the Knockouts Title. At 2008’s Victory Road, Kong got her return match and Taylor got her chance to show the win wasn’t a fluke. The rookie did just that, reversing a chokeslam attempt into a surprise pin, pinning Kong and retaining the Knockouts Title. Raisha Saeed and Kong didn’t let her go that easily, ganging up on her until Abyss came to her aid.

Elsewhere on the card, Gail Kim took on Angelina Love, who had cost her a possible Knockouts Title win two months prior. Gail got sweet revenge in the form of a win, but almost found herself outnumbered by Angelina and her Beautiful People teammate Velvet Sky post-match. The two attempted to beat Gail down and place a paper bag over her head, but she managed to slip out of the ring and escape humiliation.

What are your memories of these moments?

NXT Redux (July 12th, 2017): Vanessa Borne makes her way to the Mae Young Classic

Welcome to this week’s NXT review. Last week we saw a dejected Billie Kay and Peyton Royce call out the rest of the locker room for not celebrating Billie’s birthday.

The Icons do not care about the Mae Young Classic, they just want to be respected by the women currently in NXT. Thea Trinidad also makes a brief appearance as she gets into another fight with Andrade “Cien” Almas.

Additionally, Ruby Riot and Ember Moon get in each other’s faces as they argue over who should be the number one contender for Asuka‘s championship. Asuka previously stated in a twitter post that she’s not coming back to NXT until a worthy opponent emerges.

This week all these threads take a back seat as we’re treated to another Mae Young Classic Qualifier. Vanessa Borne, formerly known as Danielle Kamela, takes on Jayme Hachey, also known as Jayme Jameson.

Vanessa makes her entrance to a bad ass hard rock theme song. Commentator Mauro Ranallo, love him, starts making note of her previous accomplishments as a former Phoenix Suns dancer.

Jayme makes her entrance and we get to know her a bit more, she’s a former high school wrestler, the only female member of her team!

The match starts and the women tie up. They jockey for position before Jayme hits Vanessa in the face. She takes her down with a shoulder block. They go back and forth before Vanessa hits Jayme hard in the back with a stiff kick. They go back and forth again before Jayme flattens Vanessa with a sidewalk slam. Jayme then locks Vanessa in a rest hold.

Vanessa starts powering out and backs Jayme into the corner, freeing herself of the hold in the process and flipping Jayme over. She then racks Jayme in the chest. She continues pummeling her with hits and then a clothes line. She drop kicks Jayme and then continues hitting her.

Vanessa hits a sidewinder uranage for the win. Vanessa now moves on to the Mae Young Classic.

After the match she talks about what the tourney means.

She says she feels amazing and can not wait to be a part of history.

Additionally, Nikki Cross makes a brief appearance with Sanity after the Authors of Pain continue their destruction of the tag division.

Thoughts: Unfortunately I wasn’t impressed with Vanessa as much as I hoped I’d be. The match was criminally short and I’m guessing it’s because Vanessa isn’t as experienced as her counterpart?

We haven’t seen much of Vanessa as the NXT Women’s Division begins readying itself for a new batch of talent. It’s hard to judge her as a complete package yet since we know so little about her. From her theme and look, she’s supposed to be a hard rock chick, someone who’s not afraid to get rough.

However, she needs to further work on her skills because I felt like we were watching the match in slow motion. This was a much better outing for her opponent. I don’t think she’ll go that far in the tournament and that’s OK. She needs to begin separating herself from the pack and NXT is definitely where she’ll begin doing that.

I did really like her finisher though. It’s something we haven’t seen and if she continues to whip out new moves, she will not get lost in the shuffle. Even though she still needs a lot of work, I hope she succeeds because I want to see what she can bring to the table.

Jayme was a nice surprise. She did her job very effectively. She lead the match and controlled it for a good chunk of time. She’s strong and efficient. I hope to see her competing again soon.

I’m a bit puzzled at Nikki. There’s no follow up to how she feels about losing to Asuka in that brutal Last Woman Standing Match? Come on NXT, you can do better, remember continuity?!

NXT still suffers from many stop/starts. On the one hand I’m excited to see the Ruby/Ember bout, I’m eager to see what the Icons do now, and I’m pumped for the Mae Young Classic. On the other hand, it’s frustrating that the women are still not even given 10 minutes to work a match and we’re constantly struggling for continuity. NXT, get it together.

What did you think of this week’s NXT? Were you impressed by Vanessa? What do you want to see moving forward? Sound off in the comments below.
